  2. The Grand Hotel, corner of The Square and Church Street west, 1906~

    The Grand Hotel was built in 1906 for Martin Craven, to replace the Provincial Hotel which was gutted by fire. Over the years it has been host to visiting diginitaries to Palmerston North, including Royalty in 1927 and 1954. In 1985 the then owners, Manawatu Holdings Ltd, converted the top floors into commercial offices and retail space.

Prior to its construction the Catholic parishioners of Otautau would have had to travel to Riverton to hear Mass.     This is a sepia photograph of the Edendale Gravel Pit in 1908. The men are Jack Milne - contractor and carrier around Edendale, John Angus McDonald and George Routledge. Jack Milne carried coal and cheese crate wood to Seaward Downs and Menzies Ferry and he would bring cheese back to the railway. He would also cart groceries and metal. All the electric light poles round Edendale township were dragged from the railway by Jack Milne. He towed these by chain dragged behind on the ground. Jack Milne lived at 10 acre, Edendale.
