Sytuacja w firmie, już wcześniej napięta z powodu wewnętrznych tarć i problemów produkcyjnych, gwałtownie się zaogniła, gdy do gry wkroczył Waszyngton. Po publicznym wezwaniu do dymisji Tana przez Donalda Trumpa, sprawą zainteresował się Biały Dom, a akcje technologicznego giganta zanotowały gwałtowny spadek.

Głównym powodem politycznej burzy wokół prezesa Intela są jego domniemane powiązania z Chinami. Krytyka dotyczy jego przeszłości zawodowej – zanim dołączył do Intela, Lip-Bu Tan kierował firmą Cadence Design.
