#tv tonight: ep 5 of 1899 ( https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80214497 ).

In which much happens, and many of my perceptions are altered … but I'm still pretty much at sea.

Now thinking more simulation/computer game. Generation ship? Space colony? Alternate dimension with tentacled monsters?

The old man (Maura's father?) is not entirely in charge, tho positioned as "the creator". And what are they all looking for?

To be honest I think I've nothing to say – not in a bad way, I'm just still really quite lost but in a way that feels like all the clues are there I just haven't put them together yet.

And for that matter, who tells them to wake up? I do have some speculation about who might be next to "wake from a nightmare", but one of my ideas was clearly off base when he shortly afterwards went and interacted with the electronics.

I wish we'd seen more of the passenger manifest, how many people were on both ships? Are they even two ships ...

This is a hard series to write thoughts on as we go, I've not yet put together enough to be coherent or even to verbalise the somewhat nebulous speculation. This is enjoyable, I like stories where you have to figure it out as you go, it's just not writeable about!

Currently wondering if some people are just NPCs who are being deactivated. And does everyone (PC anyway) have a letter?

We were more in the Captain's head than Maura's this time, and it was him commanded to "wake up" at the beginning too. Are we going to go through more of the characters, or is it these two who need to wake up? They're the ones with letters that we've seen too, definitely set up to mirror each other.

It also reminds me of a country house murder mystery, where all the characters are types and have secrets (and everyone has a motive!).

Well nothing is clearer. Except that I'm more convinced that none of what we're seeing is actual reality. The fun of course, is figuring out what is & why it's not.

The screens at the end shift how it seems not to be real – are they Mrs Wilson's? She still seems to be orchestrating some at least of what's going on.

And for that matter what's the deal with Mrs Wilson? She seems to be orchestrating rather a lot of the little pas de deux.

I have no answers to any of my questions, so an intriguing start to a series. I hope it has a satisfying set of answers to figure out :)

In fact, I'm not even sure whether what we just watched in ep 1 is reality within the show universe. It can't just be in Maura's head, we definitely get scenes where it's not in her point of view. But she's the one who (like the viewer) isn't quite sure what's real: she has to tell herself who, where & when she is.

The rest seem clear on those bits of their personal equations, but none of them are what they seem. And they're all creepy.
