Photograph, Richardson's Horse Bazaar Redan Street, 1890-1900
This is a photograph of 3 gigs and 6 dogs outside Richardson's Stables. About the Stables: Samuel Richardson arrived in Wyndham in 1878. In 1881, he was engaged by R.A. Elliot to manage Elliot's livery and coaching stables. Samuel also drove the Edendale coach. In 1882, Samuel, in partnership with Richard Horne purchased the business. Richard died of pneumonia sometime later and the business became known as Richardson's Stables. Richardson's coaches met six trains daily at Edendale and ran a coach to Fortrose three times a week. Samuel died in 1897 and his widow, Sarah, continued to run the business with her brother, W Cruickshank, as Manager. Sarah and Samuel's son, William, later took over. The Family sold the business in 1912.

“Black, a Bidjara and Ghungalu man, is here most afternoons, enthusiastically telling tourists about the area’s Aboriginal history. He shows them artefacts he’s found in the mountains: axe heads, grinding stones, crude but effective knives chipped from stone – all rattling around in a Coles shopping basket on the back seat of his LandCruiser.
“I’ll tell you the real story – the one that’s not in the history books,” he says.”Another #TruthTelling from the Guardian’s The Descendants Series.
“Cullin-la-ringo was a turning point in Queensland’s history, paving the way for “warfare” between First Nations peoples and the settlers over control of the state’s north. It would claim the lives of tens of thousands of Indigenous people over the decades that followed. Some groups, including the Gayiri, never recovered.”
Nothing I can type here will do justice to history and the need to get it out in the open. Best you read the article(s) in this series yourself and bear witness to thie Continent’s recent past.

If you like this sort of thing, you’ll want to keep an eye on upcoming releases from Letterform Archive Books: https://letterformarchive.org/mail?utm_source=Mastodon?utm_campaign=alphabets
Any guesses for why an apostrophe precedes each letter in this print?

Franklin Type Foundry, Convenient Book of Specimens, Cincinnati, 1892
Hello, spring. (For our friends in the Northern Hemisphere.)
You may know Century Expanded, or Century Schoolbook, but here’s a lesser-known, earlier Century. Franklin, established in 1856, is one of the first foundries in the US. It was folded into American Type Founders, along with 22 other companies, in 1892.

"The Foreigner Pays the Tax".
Cartoon by J. S. Pughe for "Puck" magazine, 1895, about William McKinley's high tariff policies.
Caption:
"JUST WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN EXPECTED -
He built his house on a sand-heap; and the rising tide is making short work of it."It sorta feels like someone might have taken inspiration from the top half of this cartoon without bothering to look at the bottom half.

Franklin Type Foundry, Convenient Book of Specimens, Cincinnati, 1892.
Specimen makers aimed to show each typeface at its best, often picking random words that display key letters and characteristics. The result is its own kind of original poetry. (See Alastair Johnston’s “Alphabets to Order”.) Sometimes, though, foundries pulled from existing texts for their specimen books.#TypeSpecimens #Poetry #Typefaces #Fonts #1890s #FranklinTypeFoundry #Victorian

There may come a time when this 1894 cartoon from "The Mascot" newspaper in New Orleans is no longer relevant. That time has not yet arrived. -
New Orleans c 1896-1897. Unusual view of the Lee Monument at Tivoli Circle, with Howard Avenue and some of the "Moonlight Towers" (early electric street lighting system) in the background.

The Horse Manure Problem of 1894.
The 15 to 30 pounds of manure produced daily by each beast multiplied by the 150,000+ horses in New York city resulted in more than three million pounds of horse manure per day that somehow needed to be disposed of. That’s not to mention the daily 40,000 gallons of horse urine.
In other words, cities reeked. #History #1890s #horses #transport #NewYork
