  1. @avirr I'd love to see these in person! The page from the Bible of St Louis is one of eight (the final quire) in the Morgan Library in NY; the rest is in Toledo cathedral... I just found a description with some of the Toledo pages here: docs.moleiro.com/en_Bible_Sain

  2. @medieval_illuminations #TIL: the central arms (azure, a lion rampant argent) are those of Monhaut, a #Flintshire family:
    theheraldrysociety.com/article

The arms of Clare are unmistakeable, & Baxter (1987) suggested other heraldic allusions to Berkeley & Bohun:

This bestiary's dated to the 1240s, a time of turmoil. Marcher lords may have enjoyed dreaming of military surprise...

  3. @medievalists Interesting article, & use of DNA analysis! Chess pieces made of horse, cow & deer bones - and "fashioned by groups (of pawns, of rooks, of bishops and knights and of queens and kings), which testifies to planned, routine activity, probably in a specialized workshop."

  4. @medievalists
    #13thCentury #realpolitik article!

including this splendid image of #KingJohn holding a model of #Beaulieu abbey.

Legend says that he founded it after a quarrel with the #Cistercian order & subsequent nightmare of being beaten by monks. Gratitude & prayers ensued!

  5. Interesting research on textile dyes in medieval Estonia:
    news.err.ee/1609119521/early-m
& the use of local plants / lichen mixed with the woad, which was not the local variety but traded & widely cultivated across Europe from the #13thCentury. 🧵 1/3

  6. = Hears on the "Hashtag-Cult" podcast about anti-vaxxers:

    > "For example, I couldn't tell you about 13th-century Chinese history, it's not their fault".

= Michael for the rest of the evening:

    > Google 13th-century Chinese history.

  7. @dailymedievaldeath I see the same royal arms & crown are then shown right way up for the accession of Stephen's successor #HenryII. Thanks for highlighting this use of inverted arms.
f117r of this #manuscript records the deaths of Gilbert de Clare & William Marshal - & with clasped hands, the remarriage of Isabel, the daughter of William & widow of Gilbert: bl.uk/manuscripts/Viewer.aspx? (description at bl.uk/manuscripts/FullDisplay.)

  8. @ANDictionary Such an interesting excerpt, & image, thank you! It took me a while to find the manuscript on the Gallica site, so here's the whole page & context for anyone else interested: gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1 - bonus image!

  10. Reminded by University Challenge’s question about the Great Cause and who would get the Scottish crown in the 13th century. My class studied this early in secondary school in Hawick, drawing up family trees. But none quite as huge as this one I just found! #ScottishHistory #Scotland #Medieval #Royal #FamilyHistory #Genealogy #13thCentury #ThirteenthCentury #SchoolHistory #History #School #Teaching #Education #SecondarySchool #UniversityChallenge #FamilyTrees

  11. A splendid #manuscript has been digitised & highlighted by the #BritishLibrary. It's a grant by #AlfonsoX & his queen #Violante, "reigning as one" (regnante en uno), in the year in which Lord Edward son of #HenryIII of England was knighted in #Burgos - 1254, when the future #EdwardI came to marry #EleanorOfCastile. The attached seal of Castile & León is not wax but lead.

  13. The #medieval seal of #Shoreham in Sussex refers to the town as Hulkesmouth, after the #ship type depicted, a hulc.

Wonderful discussion of the many images & archaeological hopes from the #NewportShip project:
'In Search of the Hulc...' newportship.org/wp-content/upl

    I haven't seen details of the #clinker #hull of the #13thCentury #MortarWreck in #Dorset; #MedievalMastodon is it a hulc?
