  1. Working on some writing that I may or may not ever finish but that I know I'll be working on for many months and possibly a few years.

I'm currently working in (neo) vim 'cause I just use vim for everything and it makes for a great general purpose editor, but...

I'm bit by bit gathering materials (like wordnet dictionaries and such) and looking at the Python curses library and working out in my head what my "perfect" terminal based modal text/markdown editor should be and how I want it to work. No code written yet, just stewing over the "right" interface and mechanisms in my head a lot.

Of course I'm also spending more and more time just working in vim still and doing prose in vim isn't really feeling that weird anymore.

  2. I'm a bit worried by how early into Friday the crazy old man went silent on Truth [sic] Social [sic]. He's usually up late on Fridays posting crazy stuff - crazier the later he's up.

I'm afraid there's gonna be some big October WTFs this weekend. He's up to something.

  3. I've long been bothered by ever-extending copyright terms and the associated loss of the public commons. Something recently occurred to me that I'm hoping folks might be able to weigh in on who actually know copyright law and what copy-left licenses and practices are out there that I'm not familiar with.

Basically, by default anything you write is automatically copyrighted for generations to come. You do not need to include a copyright notice to declare a work copyrighted anymore - it's been that way under US law for many decades.

But what about *choosing* to include a copyright notice and specifying a chosen earlier expiration date?

"© John Smith, 2026. All rights reserved until 2050 upon which time this work is willed to the public domain by the author."

Would that not be perfectly valid and legal under existing copy-right law and let people choose easily and simply to choose a span of copyright that they feel is reasonable?
