  7. More #photography! Some 2023 shots from Cape Cod!

This was my first time shooting with this lens (the fabulous 18-55) and I didn't quite know how shallow the depth of field was. Most of my shots came out great, some are a little weird, but the colors are amazing.

  8. @snugug thanks!

I've been working on this map for a while, discovering #mapbox API along the way, often struggling with behaviors I couldn't understand.

I want to write about this and the rest of the site also, which is a pretty uncommon use of #Eleventy I think.

Not sure when I'll be able to take the time for this, but it will come.

  9. Uncovered and old laptop with plenty o stickers. Can't remember #abv tho - @snugug this you? (Also 10Below? delicious)

  10. Got a transatlantic flight today so I'm going to play around with running Gemma4' 26b model locally through Claude Code. If it works, this could be very fun and interesting... I'll keep you posted.

  11. After being up and traveling for 31 hours, about 27 of which I've been awake for, I'm finally at my hotel for #tpac. Looking forward to seeing y'all tomorrow!

  12. I went up to #StormKingArtCenter this weekend and played around with some #infrared #photography. These are just quick edits to get a feel for them, but they're pretty fun I think! #sculpture #landscape

  13. Michael Seltzer is probably a name you don't know, but for me, he was like an uncle, part of my parents' close group of friends I called "The New Yorkers". He was a sweet, loving man and I will miss him.

I knew he worked in the nonprofit space, I was lucky enough to go to his and Ralph's wedding and see the impact he had on so many, but I never really knew just how large of an impact he had on the fight against #hivaids.

  14. Also, a fun bit of discovery I did for that support ticket: in the Avatar TTRPG, your character class is your “playbook". The fillable PDF containing every single playbook, each with all of the info you need to fully play the game, _is an order of magnitude smaller_ than Demiplane's stand-alone single character page (1.2MB vs 13.1MB)

  15. Against my better judgement, I didn't DM the engineering leaders at Demiplane this morning to tell them about the problems I found. Instead, an unfortunate customer service rep is going to log into their ZenDesk to a message titled "Performance, Accessibility, and Security Issues”, a note on top saying send this to engineering management, and a small blog post's worth of app analysis.

  16. This isn't an SPA vs MPA thing either! Technically their site is more server rendered than mine is; mine's 100% client rendered SPA from IndexedDB. I just do it way faster then them.

  17. For anyone following this, I've reached like 95% feature parity and I've got receipts.

The official source? 13.1MB, 169 requests, 3.8s LCP, 1460ms total blocking time, 6.5s speed index.

Mine: 760kB, 40 requests, 0.9s LCP, 0ms blocking, 0.5s speed index. Oh, and it works entirely offline. In fact, storage _for the whole site, including all data and images_ is smaller than loading the official character sheet.

  18. I got to the top of the giant inline JSON object and, drumroll please, IT'S A NEXT.JS APP! And! Guess what?! A good portion of that inline data gets ignored in favor of GraphQL calls that are made _for the same data_ later on in the app lifecycle.

I'd like to file a concerned citizen bug report plz.

  19. Don't know if this is still a thing people get excited about, but ChromeOS.dev won *two* #webby awards!

    winners.webbyawards.com/2023/w

Best Mobile Visual Design - Function Websites and Mobile Sites (Webby, People's Voice)
Best Services & Applications Websites and Mobile Sites (People's Voice)

Super proud of everyone who worked on this with us, and especially excited that our approach to truly fluid and intrinsic design was recognized!

  20. Having messed around with this for a couple of weeks, that burden grows. I can see the team's experience etched in the code delivered. Full JSON to hydrate the page instead of rendered HTML, a GraphQL query deciding whether or not you're logged in and if it should be displayed. MY FULL BILLING ADDRESS returned on a non-transaction page as part of my profile. Security, accessibility, performance, all secondary to (probably) developer experience.

  21. Sometimes I feel cursed with the burden of knowledge™ that web apps don't need to be as shitty as they are.

For now the second time in less than a year, I've bee so fed up with the "new” digital companion tool for a #ttrpg _I've built my own from scratch_ just to not have to use the official React + clickable div solution that takes multiple seconds to load, has half a second of lag to change what shoulda been a radio input, and has a poor mobile experience.

  22. Good morning everyone ☀️ I'm just up after a nice long lie, courtesy of Grant and the parrots. The wind and rain made for good snuggling up in bed 😊 I wouldn't say we had any storm as such though, more of just "weather" so I think we got off quite lightly.

We didn't end up playing co-op BG3 yesterday as it was a lovely day and Grant wanted to make the most of it by going birding up the woods, so I ended up playing by myself. I realised that I had named by character in our co-op with my grandson the same name as my single campaign Bard, so I had two of the same name. This annoyed me and, being a serial restarter, I deleted my Bard campaign and started a new one instead ☺️

You can use the magic mirror to rename your Tav, but it doesn't rename the campaign itself and that would have niggled away at me. Good excuse for another restart anyway, and I finally managed to get the achievement for killing Commander Zhalk on the Nautiloid, and have already had a conversation with Astarion I've never experienced before - the game continues to amaze me with its depth!

Plan is to play the co-op campaign with Ethera and Grognak today now as I don't think my grandson is available anyway. We have vegan chicken Kiev's and some potato things lined up for lunch.

Have a really lovely and restful day, whatever you get up to.🤗

  25. | TUESDAY |

We woke up a little later and spent some time snuggling and listening to the rain. Greg had to work again—normally on a Tuesday (and Wednesday) he'd have to go into the office in London, but he asked his manager about potentially working from home while I'm here to cut down on covid risks, and his manager agreed.. so he'll get to work from home my entire visit. I spent the day curled up next to him while he worked, reading and watching some shows.

There's an amazing Vietnamese restaurant in Plumstead called Viet Baguette, which we always visit when I here. I really felt like their food for lunch, but we had planned to have fish and chips for dinner so we just had a quesadilla for lunch.

After dinner we popped out to do some shopping and look for a bed. Greg's been sleeping on a fold out futon for a while now, and has decided to get a proper bed finally. We got to shop for a mattress last night (and found one), which was actually quite a lot of fun. It felt really domestic and home-making-ey to be out shopping for the bed we're going to share, even though I'm only here for 6 weeks.

We picked up fish and chips on the way home, which is something I love to have while I'm here because the chips remind me of the proper chips we used to get when I was a kid.

  26. | MONDAY |

Greg got up early to drop his wife to work, and climbed back into bed with me when he got home. There's something so delicious about being snuggled awake and fucked before even opening my eyes.. it puts me in a fabulous mood for the rest of the day.

Greg worked all day, and I got to just curl up in the bed next to his desk. I watched a couple of episodes of The Undoing and read a little. We chatted in between his meetings, and it was lovely to just be able to reach over and touch him or to see him working right next to me.

In the evening we took Alethea to the vet for her vaccination and post enucleation check up—everything is fine. Once we got home we joined his wife and had some dinner, watched some more of The Pitt and True Blood.

I noticed in the first seen we meet Tara in, she's reading a copy of Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein. I was so excited we had to stop the episode for me to talk about how fascinating it is that she's reading that book, and how it completely changes the character for me now!

It was a relaxing day, quiet and domestic.. I feel happy.

  27. | SUNDAY |

We woke up and played a little, then got up for breakfast and snuggled on the sofa with some TV. We watched an episode of Survivor SA, and ended up watching the first episode of a show called Years and Years. I'm super interested in seeing how it turns out.. the episodes are well written, the acting and direction is fabulous, and it's an intense and intriguing premise. It's densely written, and we had to take breaks because I kept losing focus.

We did a bit of cleaning to return the other-husband's flat and (after negative covid tests) we headed back to Greg's house.

On the way back we stopped at a toy shop so I could pick up a game of Keepy Uppey... we're going to have dinner with a couple that Greg and his wife are good friends with, who I've also met a few times and really enjoy their company. They have two small kids, and I'm picking up a few gifts for them.

It was lovely to catch up with his wife again. I've missed her. We try to keep touch throughout the year and have occasional calls, but we've both had a hectic year. I got to see their cats—including Alethia, who got diagnosed with a cancer last year and had her eye removed. She's perfectly healthy now, and wandering around the house like a tiny disgruntled pirate.

We ordered in some dinner as a treat, and introduced Greg's wife to The Pitt. We headed to bed, and I absolutely crashed!
