  1. @ianbicking @KathyReid I am all here for people asking questions about AI that aren't positive, especially as we seem to have a glut of "positivity" around AI.

Machine learning and pattern matching are great and has actual real world applications that are awesome (think medical imaging etc).

However it also comes with some very big questions about its role in our society. Questions that tend to get glossed over by the "positive" people.

    Questions like:

    - Should we really be using LLMs and Image generation tools to try and replace human beings?

    - How/Why should we trust these tools as sources of truth?

    - Who's written the algorithms that drive these tools? What data sets are being used? Have people been given the opportunity to opt-in/opt-out?

    - Why is it that many of the people shilling for AI now were shilling for Crypto last year?

    - What are the impacts if the AI gets it wrong? See recent example of books on Amazon about foraging that have been "written" by AI and contain some very dodgy information. What is an AI created work leads to actual harm? Who is responsible?

    - Look at the current SAG/WGA strike over the potential use of AI tools to replace writers and actors. What next for human creativity?

This is different to crypto in that it is actually a double edged sword (crypto has a single edge, that's been blunted and chipped away), it can be used to bring real benefit, but it can do real harm.

Yeah, this social media post should have been a blog post I guess.

  2. "If the potato turns cool, like the shadow of an old tree: A chill will settle in, and the nights may grow colder than usual.

"If the potato starts to wrinkle like the skin of an ancient crone: The land will grow dry, and a time of little rain is coming."

Though largely forgotten, the practice of potato weather prediction remains listed in the parish archives, where it is quietly acknowledged in the annual village review as "ongoing and satisfactorily unverified."

  3. In the West Country of England, potatoes were often used to predict the weather. The rules below were found in the diary of one Clem Morley of Puddlington-on-Marsh:

"If the potato feels warm, like a stone left in the sun: The days ahead will be clear and bright, with the sun keeping watch over the fields.

"If small sprouts appear on the potato during the night: Rain is near, as the potato drinks in the first hints of moisture meant for the earth.

  4. Damn, the #ChatGPT 4 usage cap also applies to testing and implementing #CustomGPTs. And I swear there's some usage multiplier on top, like there's internal requests (like RAG or Actions) happening that count against the quota.

This does not feel like a very serious development environment!

  9. While historical chat wasn't doing it for me, I like the #Khanmigo collaborative story writing.

It follows a pretty strict template: you write two sentences, then it writes two sentences. It also writes a short prompt to give you ideas of what to write.

It could be better with a few general questions. Like I was going for a dark creepy vibe and it keeps making stuff light. But it doesn't even know that.
