Plot twist. Did not see this coming.
We have a cheapo backup phone in case of emergency. It's a Motorola G22. So I turned it on again to check what security patches are on it. I looked at the update history, and it reveals a startling story.
Back in August we updated to whatever Motorola offered as the current patch at that time, which turns out was the Android security patch for December 2024. Tonight it applied a new security update, which now brings it up to Android security patch for March 2025. So yes, Motorola are sending security updates even for Android 12. But it takes them 18 months for these to flow through OTA.
So if I buy a fancy Motorola phone that offers 7 years worth of security patches, I might well find myself 18 months behind any critical security updates with no recourse. I am sooooo glad I didn't buy a phone today.
