there is so much lost nuance, because metaphors and similes are *intoxicating*. they have such a hold on everyone's brains, and are so much easier to quickly babble about, that discussions almost immediately devolve into discussing and expanding on the exaggerated simile rather than the original thing. this is how you end up with hundreds of messages about orphans and meat grinders like it's a class of edgy teens instead of an actual discussion by mature people who understand nuance and are able to conceive of morally-bad things that are not The Worst Possible Thing That Could Be Invented Ever (Also It's Secretly Made From Blueprints Found In Hitler's Mansion). i don't like these tools, in fact i hate them; i think that, above all, they are just environmentally unjustifiable and generally involve a lot of human exploitation, but also that they are made by people who would not hesitate to press your soul into a dime, and that they are generally bad for the long-time health of a project's community, quality, and code. but i'm not gonna pretend like they're "The Machine That Shoots A Baby Each Time You Press A Key," because that is useful to no one for this debate. we're all supposed to be on A Spectrum and yet no one can comprehend that things might be more nuanced than "blessed tool vs killing machine."
sorry if i'm sounding like a broken record, but please reread your message next time you're about to call something The Orphan Grinder and think about whether you are okay erasing that much nuance and context from the conversation. think about what we're losing. is it actually helpful to better *understand* the situation, or does it just make it easier to fit in our heads?

both my rss and fedi feeds are now completely full of people piling on that DRAMATICALLY OUT-OF-CONTEXT quote[^1] from the rust llm policy and yet almost no one is actually wearing the mantle of responsibility and compromise that comes with this sort of discussion.
i for one am absolutely impressed by the courage of the people that are least *trying* to do something about it, like jyn for rust-lang/rust, or emilazy for nixpkgs, despite all the vitriol and straight up harassment that is happening here. so many people are so used to just being "concerned" or "outraged" all the time and never actually do anything about it except build walls, enforce higher and higher purity standards, destroy their own beloved communities because compromise is hard and annoying and feels like defeat more often than not. i don't really agree with some points of the respective policies, but it's insane to see so many people act as if they're blank pages with just written "i want to see the world burn and every contributor has to personally kill a child from now on." can we NOT fracture into all-or-nothing parties that hate each other because of petty grievances over wording or possibilities.
it feels like most of the people complaining about either the rust or nixpkgs RFCs have just no idea how to actually govern and get a large community to *do* stuff. you have to have broad agreement, you have to have debates over specific things and prevent discourse that will never go anywhere or just infiltrated everything, you have to have compromises. no one wants a nazi bar here, but you also can't just cut out everyone that isn't exactly you, or you don't have a community anymore: that's either a cult, or a sad lonely birthday party.

pps: (not that i didn't love my friends before, not at all. i just didn't... really... miss people in general, not without looong periods of absence. it was a bummer not to see them obviously and i tried to see them often or talk or w/e, but i didn't really feel lonely if i didn't. now it happens a lot more quickly ._.)

after almost a DECADE of waiting (~2017 according to my notes), i have finally acquired...

specifically, it's a 3XL version from the japanese fangamer site. it's wayyyy too oversized for me (even most of my dresses are much shorter than this), this was the last unit sold _in the entire world_. i got it from fangamer jp, since the worldwide and europe sites have long been out of stock, and while i had planned for years to get it (when most sizes were still available and the number of units was in the 100's), it never actually materialised until a few months ago, at which point the number of units reached single digits.
