In 2023, someone threatened to kill me, my staff, my daughter, and mentioned my dog in their frequent messages to my office. They had a history of acting on their threats of violence, so police wanted a statement from me with urgency. It was a sitting day and I couldn’t leave the Assembly building, and police cannot enter Parliament without permission from the Speaker (at the time, an ALP member who had her staff tell me off for telling media that I disagreed with Labor cuts to women’s services when I was a community sector worker).
The Speaker refused permission, and said I’d have to go outside the building to speak to police. While the stalker was on their way to set me on fire, and I didn’t know what they looked like. So I went outside and waited. Luckily, the police got there first, and the person was arrested. The Speaker never spoke a word to me about what she’d done, but told the Canberra Times it was just a miscommunication and we got along just fine (a blatant lie, we very clearly did not get along because she wanted me dead and couldn’t even bring herself to say it to my face).
Problem with Labor is they’ll only express empathy or fund services when they think it matters for their vote. If you’re not gonna keep them in power, they’ll happily stand back and watch you die.
