This is the best side-view I was able to get of former #GNRi 4-4-0 steam loco No. 171 Slieve Gullion working the 2025 #RPSI Santa Specials. This shows the engine’s defining features nicely:
1. Two sets of small leading wheels, two sets of big driving wheels, and no trialing wheels, hence 4-4-0!
2. An un-tapered boiler (cylindrical)
3. A separate coal and water tender (so not a tank engine despite the Thomas-blue colour) -
The designs of many of our Irish cycle lanes has led me to suspect that many are designed by people only vaguely familiar with the concept of a bicycle, these markings in #Lucan sure do suggest I’m right!
-
A glimpse of times past — now heavily altered to become the dream home for a railway fan, hints of the distinctive MGWR (Midland Great Western Railway) architectural style survive in the former Lucan North station on the hill high above #Lucan village on the banks of a rural stretch of the #RoyalCanal.

It turns out just one of the twelve 2025 #RPSI Santa Specials would be blessed with some winter sun, but former #GNRi 4-4-0 #steamLoco No. 171 Slieve Gullion sure looked great rounding the corner at Intel in #Leixlip yesterday morning!

An #IrishRail Intercity #train entering the tight turn on the approach to #Leixlip Louisa Bridge station as the railway and canal turn 90° to enter the Ryewater viaduct directly after the station. The newly redeveloped towpath is unusually free of joggers, dog walkers, and cyclists here!

An #IrishRail Commuter service rounding the tight corner on the approach to #Leixlip Louisa Bridge station. This is a particularly pretty section of the #RoyalCanal because it seems to attract more wild flowers than the average stretch does.

An #IrishRail Commuter #train races towards Maynooth along the #RoyalCanal having climbed the bank up to Blakestown level crossing and the 13th lock at the entrance to the Intel Ireland plant in #Leixlip. The recently redeveloped towpath was heaven for a summer walk 🙂

I ventured down the section of the #RoyalCanal east of #Leixlip Confey station. The towpath has yet to be redeveloped here, so it gets pretty wild pretty quick, and apart from the odd jogger and dog walker you meet much fewer people. The #IrishRail Commuter trains still break up the solitude though.
