  1. gh-profiler 0.6.1 makes an explicit call to check that the user's gh CLI tool is authenticated. This should be a much more reliable ux when the user is unauthenticated, or has an expired token.

By itself, the auth check takes about 0.3 seconds. But since calls are batched now, there's no performance hit to making this call. There was one existing call that wasn't batched, and it is now. 0.6.1 is faster overall than 0.6.0 even though it's doing more work.

  2. I wasn't super excited about having another project to maintain, but gh-profiler has been surprisingly satisfying to work on.

It attracts people who are deeply committed to open source in all the best ways. It's such a privilege to work with so many good people. :)

  3. @thejtoken We talked a bit about how AI actually works. These conversations are always worth having, if the person actually wants to know more.

The messaging from the AI companies is overwhelmingly misleading to people who don't already have a basis for judging the technology objectively themselves.

  4. @thejtoken People have always asked for components that don't work, and shared incorrect ideas about what might be wrong with their bikes. But these interactions are different, because people are so confident that "artificial intelligence" must know what's going on.

There are also people doing bike maintenance who are relying entirely on AI for deciding what to adjust on a bike. That's scary; I'd guess more than one person is going to crash because something fails at speed.

  5. I try to pay attention to the impact of AI in non-tech fields.

Bike mechanics now have to deal with customers who come in with specific requests after consulting ChatGPT about their bikes.

One of our local mechanics shared some of what they're seeing. People are asking for components that don't work with the rest of what's on their bike. They're also saying, "My bike is making this sound and ChatGPT says it's because of this."

  6. I saw 11 new-to-me birds in Long Beach. Conferences are a great way to see new birds!

  7. Visiting the Long Beach Chess Club was a great way to close out a week of PyCon!

  8. This is nuts. We ate at a decent Italian restaurant last night, which I'd recommend to others.

But when you visit the home page for the restaurant, there's no menu available. Instead, there's a chatbot with suggested questions like "Menus in PDF?"

They replaced deterministic links with...questions to a chatbot???

  9. I’m at sprints until 3:00 or so. If you want to talk open source contribution quality, django deployment, or chess, come say hi!

  10. Texts I’ve received from my 15yo while away at PyCon:

  11. Also, the Long Beach Chess Club meets Tuesdays at 7pm at Trademark Brewing, which is a ten minute uber from here. There are two of us going so far, so if you want to join us tomorrow night let me know!

  12. If anyone is interested in talking about gh-profiler, django-simple-deploy, or chess, I’m working in the open area at the back of the hall. Come say hi!

  13. If anyone at sprints is interested in working on gh-profiler, or sharing thoughts about the project, I'll be there around 9:30. I need to take a little walk before transitioning to sprint mode.

If you're not looking to contribute but want to share thoughts or opinions about what signals would be helpful to you when evaluating new contributions, please come find me and share what you're thinking.

  14. uv makes it easier than ever to try new releases of Python. You don’t need to wait for the official release to give it a try!

  15. Language matters.

t’s so nice to listen to someone articulate the impacts of the words we use, and the words that are constantly shouted at us by those with giant megaphones.

  16. Some of us already know we're birders, and some of us will discover at some point there was a birder inside us all along. :)

Anyway, if you like birds, there are Swinhoe's white-eyes in the trees right around the convention center. It's always fun to come to a conference and leave with a new bird for your life list!

  17. Thanks everyone!

  18. Can you get to the lightning talk/ keynote area through the convention center this morning, or do you still have to go around to the Westin side entrance?

  19. We found an open door to the lightning talk area around the side of the arena entrance on the Westin side.

We couldn't get through the booth area because booths were being taken down. The entrance on the Hyatt side seems to be fenced off.

  20. I'm giving a lighting talk about gh-profiler this evening. If you've been curious about it, come to the lightning talk session at 5:45!

  21. The chess open space was so much fun! Some of us will be playing in the Hyatt lobby tonight if you want to joins us. :)

  22. The gh-profiler repo is using this action, so here's what the PR for this update looks like:

  24. I'm hosting an open space about chess at 11:00 in room 202A.

If you're looking to meet Python people who also play chess, please stop by!

  25. When do signups for Saturday’s open spaces become available? When I go to the signup page the only day option is Friday.

  26. I don’t think I’ll ever write a type checker, but I’m loving listening to Carl Meyer describe all the work that goes into building ty.

  27. “Trust becomes fragile”

Yes it does! And even more valuable than it already was.

  28. I wrote a workflow that runs gh-profiler every time someone opens a new PR or issue on the gh-profiler repo. A bit of dogfooding. :)

What if this kind of information was automatically surfaced all over GitHub?

Next up: Add a `--generate-workflow` command that writes this workflow to the repository you're working in.
