Can someone #help me with the language here-- when I click on "create a starter pack" at Fedidevs, it says "Write permissions will be requested to be able to follow accounts on your behalf." What does this mean? I am not a developer---I persist by asking for help, but I'm often frustrated by the lack of clarity for n00bs on this platform, even though I've been using Mastodon for many years! I'm trying to get my peers to undertake #MastonMigration but often I'm confused!

I think you could address this 'want' (for community feeds) by using relays.
A relay could represent a community.
And could selectively relay posts from specific users (across the Fediverse) that are part of that community.

I remember some people years ago saying that — they wanted to "subscribe" to the "server live feeds" on community servers different from the one that they are on
This is a way of following & perhaps even joining a community without necessarily being on that server
Which for example is useful if you wanted to be part of more than one community but use the same account

The client-side app doesn't care how the content gets into a feed
I.e., it doesn't care what algorithm you did or didn't use to create a Fediverse Custom Feed
You (the program powering the Fediverse Custom Feed) provides content — and the client-side app displays it.
Just set Actor type="Feed".
