  1. @talexb Oh, regex performance is very rarely an issue at play in most apps (except when you get the backtracking wrong...) but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be regularly re-examined and re-optimized as new techniques are worked out and old systems can be ignored and hacks compensating for them dropped. (I assume the #ifdef eunice entries are gone. I hope)

The regex engine is very self-contained, though, so you can go at it without disrupting the rest of the language, which is nice.

  3. RE: flipboard.com/@thenewsdesk/pol

This whole issue is hilarious -- if it's a reflecting pool, the part that's reflecting is the surface of the water. So does it matter what colour the bottom of the pool is?

And July 4th is only about six weeks away -- is it going to be done by then? What a disaster.

  11. @evan Well, obviously I missed my 3:14pm target, but the dessert was Apple Crumble Pie, served with Tahitian Vanilla Ice Cream. There was once piece left over, which I claimed for breakfast today. There was leftover pizza for lunch, so my last three meals have been pie and pie, pie, and pie.

  20. @genehack I bought a a few years back to replace my aging 1994 fridge. Sweet double doors!

Now there's a doo-dad in the RH door hinge that's stopping the door from closing if I open it more than 90 degrees. I have to lift the damned thing to get I'm getting an urge to break it by forcing it. Or maybe trying to find a replacement door.

I can't imagine the comedy I'd get from a refrigerator repairman when I call to ask him to repair the door. :/

  21. When you happen to check LinkedIn, even though you were retired from your last job, and you see a position advertised by someone in your network. The position appears to be your last job, now paying 10-20% more than when you were discontinued.

Either the job's been open for two years, or someone else left the team.

  22. Power's out in East York.

  23. @c_9 I'm reminded of that elevated expressway that fell over after the San Francisco earthquake in the 80's. Traffic was forced to re-route itself, having lost that highway .. and it actually managed just fine.

The Gardiner could terminate at Dunn Avenue, then we could tear down the elevated portion. The Lakeshore would replace the Gardiner.

  24. Well, I'm doing a little light C development again after a break of 20+ years (just for fun), and today I wrote a logging library. It's 137 lines of C and header files, and after I got all of the syntax errors fixed (Man, I am rusty), it finally compiled OK.

Things never work correctly the first time, right? Wrong.

Test program worked perfectly, doing a malloc, opening a file using the current timestamp, writing a line, and doing object cleanup.
