@amedee pre-commit is brilliant, so versatile, I recently wrote about using `pytest-testmon` as a pre-commit hook.

I have and really enjoyed it. Some really good advice (some of which I already follow e.g. starting with a link).
Thank you @ctietze for taking the time to put the talk and slides together. 🙏

Do you use Python Virtual environments? Want to make your life a little easier?
Checkout this blog post I wrote on using `virtualenvwrapper` to create and manage your Python Virtual environments.
Thanks to @tdjames for proof reading and catching lots of silly errors I'd made

Right, I need a #git #worktree for the current project as I'm having to switch back and forth between two branches to work out why the hell the tests fail on someones development branch and its a pain to have to `git stash` a bunch of debugging on both and switch between them.
Might have to create temproary virtual env's for each but should be considerably less painful

Enjoying playing with #vertico #orderless #embark and #marginalia under #Emacs
Been busy with work but wanted to do some tinkering for myself and they're good. Need to practice and learn a bit more (as I'm not too fussed about making everything align with my expectations and am happy to learn new things).
Also loving how easy it is to rebase branches then selectively push commits to origin using the amazing #magit glad my liberapay went through recently. Thanks again @[email protected] 👍

Up to now I’ve seen Rowan Atkinson, Keir Starmer, Michael Sheen, Andrew Bailey (the Bank of England), Ben Shephard, the financial expert Martin Lewis, and Cat Deeley promoting investment scams on YouTube for the fake company “Albion AI.” Is anyone at Google awake regarding this AI deepfake scam crap?
And yes, before you ask… Google have the links. Not that they’ll do anything with them. -
Okay, I'm back to catching up on 2025 short fiction reading. Zach Shephard's "From Darkness, Awake" ran in this anthology about Circe and has her taking on a drug lord in present-day Miami. I thought the blending of myth with crime fiction was creative.

The collectors threat has been defused and now the whole universe can sleep peacefully, but at what cost? Commander Shephard is left sitting on the bed in his own quarters remembering the last sweet hours with his beloved Tali'Zorah. But he has no time to mourn, no time to cry, he has to be the defender of the universe, the reapers menace is still dangling upon everybody's head.
I completed the main story from Mass Effect 2 (Legendary) with a full paragon playthrough, but seems like the story evolved in a way that likely will see a different Shephard in the next chapter: alone, seeking revenge for Tali, bitter and angry.
I didn't expect ME2 to hit so hard on the feelings, definitely one of those good games that like a good book, makes you connect deeply with the characters. Bravo.
I completed this playthrough entirely on the Steam Deck.

CW: Mild ME2 spoilers
I may have fucked up big time choosing Tali'Zorah as the tech specialist during the suicide mission.
She's now gone and Shephard's heart is broken (they were in love). The exact same thing happened with Ashley in ME1. Seems like the Shephard I'm playing is losing his heart little by little, I guess I won't be playing paragon in the next chapter 😅
My poor Tali, sob...

#AlternateFridayMusic
This is for Jan 30, 2026, #KidThe Who, “The Kids Are Alright” soundtrack, 1979
I encountered this film at the height of my Who mania, and it was EVERYTHING to me. It has grainy black-and-white footage of early gigs, TV appearances including the moment on the Smothers Brothers when Keith destroyed Pete’s hearing with explosives (not a metaphor), performances at The Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus and at Woodstock, the video for “Success Story,” an outstanding deep cut of John’s (with the studio recording from “Who By Numbers," not included on the soundtrack album), their last appearance with Keith at Shephardson Studios, staged expressly for the film, and more. What it didn't have is the song “The Kids Are Alright.” (Seems they’ve added it onto the later DVD and Blu-ray releases behind additional closing credits, but I liked their little joke better.)
One of the best segments of the film/selections on the album, and itself somewhat in keeping with the “kid” theme, is their performance of Mose Allison’s “Young Man’s Blues.” The attitude of the original was already pure punk; in The Who’s hands, this jazz/blues piano piece becomes muscular, even menacing.
They fucking kill it.

DOG DAYS ARE HERE
On Nov. 14, 2025, I had the honour and pleasure of taking in a foster dog named Charlie.
I did not make the choice to foster a dog lightly. As someone who grew up with a dog, I knew how much responsibility and time caring for a dog takes.
I can now confirm that the adage of rescue dogs saving the people that take them in is true.
Since COVID-19, this seed of loneliness was planted in me, but having Charlie around has helped me regrow my curiosity for life and the great outdoors.
Charlie is a half German Shephard, half American Dingo. He grew up in Texas and he was left to fend for himself on the streets for about six months before being taken in by a kind lady, who contacted the Dog Rescue Society (DRS).
The DRS is a foster-based, volunteer-run organization based in Kitchener, and their mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home dogs in need, while creating a supportive community of adopters and fosters. Usually, their foster programs take about three to four months.
For the first few weeks, he was in what is known as the decompression phase—what he needed most was a quiet, structured and safe place to be.
I remember our first walk together was around the block outside of my apartment building. He was skittish and anxious, much like me. I felt like maybe I was in over my head, maybe it was too long since I had a dog and I was not equipped to be a good dog parent.
But when he looked up at me with his hopeful big brown eyes on the elevator ride up to our apartment, I felt like we were in this together.
For the first few days we were on a strict structured routine of waking up at the same time, eating at the same time and walking at the same time during the day. It was a way to introduce structure to Charlie’s life, especially since his life was turned so completely upside down. The more time has passed the more Charlie’s personality has manifested. He is a confident dog who takes life in stride. Though doubtless he feared me when we first met, he was nothing but cordial to me. He is curious, playful and full of energy for life. All things that a depressed human like me lack sometimes.
Since the start, we’ve settled into a similar but less rigid routine. Due to some difficulties with mental health issues, having another reason to get out of bed and get some exercise has been a lifesaver. I’m happy I got to help Charlie, and he in turn has helped me quite a lot.
Charlie is currently up for adoption. If you are interested, check out his profile and others on the DRS website at thedogrescuesociety.net.
