  1. I’ve been listening to The Expanse audiobooks on my commute, and they’re really great.

I’ve read the books before, and really enjoyed them, especially since the series ended strong. And I liked the show, once I had read the books.

But now the audiobooks, with their slower pacing, and excellent performances, are really giving the story more depth. Maybe it’s just because it’s the third time through, too. But they’re making me think about character, more. And the level of craft that went into these stories is more apparent.

I find myself wishing I was back on my drive so I could listen to more of the story!

  2. Well, I’ve done it! I’m the proud owner of a brand new ! (Hyundai Ioniq 5) It was a fascinating road to get to this point:

Hail damage to the (paid-off!) car.

    Insurance totaled it.

It was going to take over a month without driving it to convert it to a salvage title.

I’ve wanted an EV for years, and used EVs were finally viable, and Ioniqs looked good… but I couldn’t find the right combination of features and price for me.

But Hyundai has massive incentives for their new inventory - so much that it’s actually cheaper, in the long run, to buy new!

    So… I did!

  3. I booked my first #scuba group trip with my local dive shop, going to Blackbeard’s in the Bahamas in September! 6 full days of nothing but eat, sleep, and dive, from a 65-foot sailboat.

After years of building up gear and training, I’m finally doing it!

  4. that my 2017 conference lightning talk about negotiation is on YouTube, and it has fewer views than my son’s 2018 brief attempt at becoming a YouTuber: a 14-minute no-audio clip of him starting a new Minecraft world.

I’m ashamed and proud at the same time!

  6. Today’s project: put fancy new LED headlights in the RT. There’s a way to do it without disassembling everything, but apparently it really sucks to do. This wasn’t too bad, actually. #motorcycle

  7. Remember how #MerrillLynch is on my never-do-business-with-them-again list? My money is finally free of their clutches!

But I’m still getting spam from them, and my attempt to unsubscribe is a perfect example of why they’re on that list.

Some of their emails don’t have an unsubscribe link.

The ones that do, go to a page that asks me to type in my email address to unsubscribe. (Assholes, already.)

It wants me to type it twice. (Assholes squared.)

Then when I type it twice and submit, it tells me that the email address is invalid!

The literal email address that I copied and pasted out of the message they sent to me!

Thankfully it’s a unique address (and the “+” is probably the problem) - so I can just block it!

(Of course, that will probably screw me next year at tax season…)

Anyhow, #PSA: don’t do business with Merrill Lynch.

  8. Other #yaks this weekend: I was in the espresso machine because it needs repaired (worn-out seal and a slow leak), but the socket I bought to do the repair doesn’t fit in the space. And local stores don’t carry 38mm sockets. So I have it all taken apart but can’t proceed for days. So I either have to put it all together again or live without it for days.

I also called #Spectrum yesterday to complain about a price hike and got them to at least give me a higher speed for the same price. But now the actual speed is lower than it was before. So I have to call them again!

  9. I was just shocked to just find out - the hard way - that the Meross smart plug I bought 4 years ago has a dangerous wiring fault. When turned off, it disconnects neutral, and leaves hot live. So if you happen to bridge hot and ground with your hand - like when working inside your espresso machine - you’ll be shocked!

Of course, I could have just unplugged the machine entirely. But the plug lives behind the fridge, so I was lazy.

Or I could have used a voltage tester to be sure! But the light on the machine was off - that seemed conclusive. (The voltage tester did indicate voltage. Next time…)

I have a newer instance of the same model plug that doesn’t have this problem. So I filed a warranty claim with Meross, for the old one, even though I’m sure it’s out of the warranty period. This is/was dangerous.

Now I have to test the other two plugs…

  10. I've been a #BackBlaze customer for years, but it sounds like they're #enshittified:

    1. They made me change my password because mine "wasn't strong enough".

    - How did they know, if they're storing it salted and hashed?!?
    - It wasn't! It was gen'd by 1password, and I had 2FA enabled!
    - Their web form for changing passwords has UX issues!

    2. I got a support reply from an AI telling me they "know about the issue" and my "feedback is valuable". And they'll automatically close the ticket soon!

  11. I blogged about migrating my MX (email) from self-hosted #Qmail, with Gmail as the front-end, to @fastmail: rainskit.com/blog/migrating-fr

Many #yaks were shaved in this adventure, and I'm much less visible to Google, now!

The post is long, mostly because I needed to eulogize the end of 25 years of email self-hosting. But it might be interesting to some of you. And it might be helpful if you are on Qmail and want to stop self hosting.

  16. And with that, my email is managed by @fastmail, and I'm one big step more-off Google!

There were some rough edges, coming from Qmail. But Fastmail (the software) seems great, and the Fastmail support people have been fantastic.

...and then right at the end, in my zeal to clean things out, I accidentally deleted the primary user account on my server. So now I get to shave that #yak 🤦‍♂️

    #PSA: Don't delete users when you're exhausted.

(I will eventually write this all up on my blog.)

  21. Day 2 of baseboard installation! Day 1 was all house prep so I didn’t toot about it. And really this is like day 30 after all the prior prep work.

The color matches fantastically! Not 100% perfect but it’s so close I only see the difference if I look for it under bright light.

Lots and lots of #yaks. One being that the saw is in the basement so each cut requires a trip back and forth, and even outside for the 16’ boards.

More details in the photo alt text. #woodworking

  22. My 8mo #LS2 #motorcycle helmet has an air and water leak because the gasket between the visor and the shell has come loose. It looks like it was just double-sided-taped in, and maybe like it was actually made a little big for the space it goes in. LS2 says they’ll fix or replace it - given that I dug up the original receipt - but I have to ship it in, sans Cardo and Brake Free. Seems like a huge PITA to do that, so I’m thinking of epoxying it. Thoughts?

And yeah, disappointed with LS2 quality.

  23. Someday I hope to do this, and I hope to do it as well as Russ did. In the meantime I will use it as inspiration. Maybe it will inspire you, too.

  24. My new #aerostich super suit (R3) now has 300 miles (480km) and one rainstorm under its belt. What an awesome suit! I love it!

Also the #motorcycle (BMW R1200RT) - it was meant for this.

  25. While updating my personal #netbsd server to patch #regresshion, I updated all my installed packages, which broke #php, which broke apache.

So I shaved all those #yaks and discovered that my CMS (#textpattern) was years out of date, and not compatible with modern PHP. And my self-written tagging plugin would require changes, if I upgraded.

So <big sigh of relief> I am finally rid of PHP, Apache, and MySQL on that server! That feels really good. (Even if I'm sad my old content is gone.)
