  1. Not a bad two days for my Web Tools project:

    * Removed the new but inaccessible hamburger menu.
    * Added breadcrumb navigation on subpages (can be toggled in settings).
    * Two new tools: URL encoder and URL param stripper.
    * A plethora of CSS tweaks and fixes.
    * Me learning new things about SvelteKit, including a stint with (experimental) async layout data inheritance.

  2. Something tells me the “Benevolent Dictator For Life” (BDFL) concept works better when the dictator is actually benevolent, and not a dictator.

I hope the open source community learns something from this WordPress situation.

  7. Me: needs to get off the couch and go pee.

My ADHD brain: Haha no fuck you.

    🥳 🎉

  8. Sitting is losing when your executive function is non-existent 🥲

  9. @mahryekuh @protonprivacy

Indeed. I think #yivi supports this correctly, but these questions remain. At least in NL I trust the government for this for now.

But only as long as they keep their data in NL.

  10. @mahryekuh @MoritzGlantz I do love how #eleventy (now build awesome) keeps the architecture at HTML-first while still providing a good developer experience. So, to me, developer experience as a webdev is: give me a development server which detects changes and reload the site automatically. Then I'm very happy as a developer. The rest of the attention should go towards the user. 3/2 ☺️

  11. Presentation question:

For a non-technical presentation, unrecorded, one that is a personal story (mine, in this case)…

    Do you really need slides?

  12. @mahryekuh TIL about Mixer.

I think Model Bakery has the best DX, and I find it converts people who hate testing to thinking it's not bad.

That said, Wagtail is impossible to get working with Model Bakery, which means you have to use their FactoryBoy project, which feels like a step backwards.

I would love to see someone who knows #WagtailCMS save us all by adding good support to Model Bakery.

  13. 💡 TIL: Vivaldi page actions.

I somehow never paid much attention to the (for me) bottom bar of the Vivaldi browser.

There is lots of useful stuff in there!

For example, there is a page zoom slider that is super handy for testing website responsiveness at different zoom levels, or when you cannot use keyboard shortcuts.

The biggest surprise is the "Page actions" menu, under a button next to the zoom slider.

One of the page actions is the "CSS debugger", which adds outlines to all elements. This saves you from manually adding `border: 1px solid red !important` when debugging.

The menu also has other filters and highlights, and even a minimap.

If you haven't explored that bar yet, I recommend you look around there.

  14. Hiding contact form controls after a successful form submission; yay or nay?

NB. It does have a (polite) live area informing the user of its success.

  15. There is a reason why I keep my drinks and food on a platter, and my tech on stands pretty much always.

Behold, me clumsily nudging over a glass of tea… again.

The fluffy belly you want to snuggle, and the murder mittens that act as a deterrent.

  18. @kojoidrissa I forgot to share this with you, but I also got a mini stroopwafel yesterday!

It sadly was a bit challenged in the “rest on top of a drinking glass” department.

  19. Happy Stroopwafel Day to those observing!

For optimal celebration vibes, you take your stroopwafel and rest (not dunk!) it on top of a steaming cup of tea. You can also use coffee if that’s what you have.

The steam melts the syrup between the waffles, resulting in more gooey goodness.

  20. One of the flavors they sold was not like the others:

    It’s stroopwafel cannoli.

This has the power to be both a culinary insult in two cultures, or one of my favorite mashups of all time.

  21. Last Friday, during the ShitPostWG Office Hours (taking over the Python Office Hours), fellow member @bmispelon said:

"You are the only Dutch person I have ever heard complain about dunking stroopwafels into coffee. Are you sure it isn't only your personal opinion?"

Valid question, so I did what any sensible shitposter would do:

I employed the help of the internet, and I broke some Dutch brains in the process.

180 people responded to a 24-hour Mastodon poll, of which approximately 128 voters claimed to be Dutch.

    ----

My question was simple: "dunking stroopwafels in coffee: yay or nay?"

The answers are clear: only 15% of the Dutch responders answered "yay".

    ----

Now, of course, this is a similar situation to pineapple on pizza: people have strong opinions on this matter, but it's not forbidden.

Enjoy your stroopwafel any way you want, but I highly recommend you try putting the cookie on top of your steaming cup of coffee, not in it.

  22. Alright, folks, time to settle this.

Dunking stroopwafels into coffee, yay or nay?

Only Dutch folks for the first two options, please.

Edit for the Dutch folks: Yes, some people dunk stroopwafels into coffee. Don't kill the messenger. (Also, I do not.)

  23. Don’t eat me or my son ever again.

  24. I hardly entered the EuroCarlton edition of the Python Office Hours before @webology decided to choose violence.

Yes, my fellow Dutchies, that is a stroopwafel dunked in coffee!

  25. Julia Evans (@b0rk)
we printed 2000 copies in June, I thought "2000 is a lot, surely we won't have to reprint for like a year" but there are only ~250 print copies left! Gonna have to do another print run soon.
(a good thing about printing in the US is that reprinting a zine just takes a week or two). Test
