  6. Musical Interlude: At the Old Time Festival, I saw the Golden Shoals (again). I saw them first when they were called the Hoot and Hollers...not sure why they changed their name, but oh well. I'm not a huge fan of their recordings, which are hit and miss for me, but live they're fun. This song came from a visit the singer made to an elderly musician who invited her to stay for a few days, and they lazed about the house in the mountains, puttering and making music. It's a great "vibe" song for a lazy weekend.

"Turn the Radio On," performed by the Golden Shoals.

  8. Turns out that broken copy of “Uncharted Waters: New Horizons” I bought from the local retro shop a couple weeks ago just had a damaged trace on the PCB (how does that even happen?), and they were able to repair it. So I went back to pick it up and totally not buy any more new old crap. I mean what could they possibly have there today that they didn’t have two weeks ago anyway? Yup, just there for the repaired cart and absolutely nothing else.

    :nkoFacepalm: Tetodamned idiot…

SG ProgramPad 6 (Genesis): A controller with extra buttons which can be programmed to perform specific input sequences. I remember seeing ads for this and the SNES version in game magazines as a kid, and thinking it would be so cool to have one to help with Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. Eventually I just learned to “get good” (for certain values of “good”), but it’s just kind of neat to finally own one of these. Even if I don’t currently have any fighting games for Genesis to get proper use out of it.

Killer Instinct (Game Boy): Awesome fighting game, slightly downgraded for the GB. Why yes, I did just get the Super Nintendo version a couple weeks ago. What’s your point?

NHL 96 (Genesis): Canadian gonna Canadian. Curiously, the shop always has stacks of Super Nintendo hockey games just sitting there collecting dust, but never any for Genesis. :nkoThink:

Super Donkey Kong (Super Famicom): A.K.A. Donkey Kong Country. Absolute favourite from my childhood. Many people will tell you the sequel is not only the best in the series, but among the best games on the entire console. I don’t disagree, but I personally love the first one more.

Super Tennis (SNES): Pretty basic tennis game, released not long after the console launched. It’s all right. Nothing special, but it was cheap, so whatever.

  9. CW: Spoilers for the last stage of Commander Keen 1 I guess.

Just had a quick playthrough of Commander Keen 1: Marooned on Mars to take screenshots so I can write about it for that website I’m supposedly working on. Mmm, nostalgia.
    :win3_msdos2: :blobcathappie:

This game sticks out in my memory as one of the first I ever soft-locked (the other being Mario 2), back before I knew what a softlock even was. The “last boss” is supposed to be invincible and impassable, unless you figure out the obvious gimmick of dropping a rock on his head, but it’s entirely possible to slip past with the right timing. Doing so allows you to reach the exit without collecting the necessary bottle of booze rocketship fuel that you need to complete the game. Since you can’t re-enter completed levels, the game becomes unwinnable.

  14. Usually around the end of the year I suddenly decide I need more vinyl in my small-but-growing collection. Most of the time I choose video game soundtracks because of course I do, but this year I did something different.

  15. OK, last batch of retro gaming junk for a while I swear. In my defense, I ordered these online last month and it all only just arrived today.

PC Engine controller: So I can finally use a proper controller with my Analogue Duo instead of the USB Genesis-style controller I’ve been using thus far.

Hori Fighting Commander PC: Also a PC Engine controller, but with six buttons. Because of the next game.

Garou Densetsu 2 (PC Engine CD): A.K.A. Fatal Fury 2. Difficult but fun fighting game. I’ve always loved the Fatal Fury series. Some day I’ll get around to playing the new one that came out last year.

Galaga ‘88 (PC Engine): A.K.A. Galaga ‘90. Space shooter. Like the original Galaga, but with even more Galaga.

Puzznic (PC Engine): I did not order this. The shop sent it to me as a gift. Some sort of tile sliding and matching game. Looks all right.

Yu Yu Jinsei (PC Engine): I did not order this either. The shop is just kinda generous I guess. Appears to be based on the board game “The Game of Life”. Remains to be seen whether I’ll understand enough to be able to play it. Oh well; won’t complain about a freebie for my collection. :nkoShrug:

  16. I see Castle of the Winds on there. A fantastic old Rogue-like game that you should absolutely play. The author later gave the game away completely for free, though their website no longer exists, but it's still available via the Wayback Machine.

(As for playing it, Archive.org does have it set up in an emulator to play in-browser: https://archive.org/details/CastleoftheWinds_1020)

  17. Rhythm game full combo videos. Is that anything people find interesting to watch?

Might continue to do it anyway just because, but trying to gauge how much effort I should put into it.

  18. It’s getting a bit late, but shout out to all the enbies on this #NonBinaryPeoplesDay.
    :QueerCatHeart_Enby:

I confess, it took quite some time to wrap my noodle around what non-binary even meant. Somehow my brain couldn’t process the concept at first. But when, after approaching the idea from various angles, it did finally start to make sense, it uhh… started to make a lot of sense.
    :blobcatnotlikethis:

Current, middle-aged Johnny is perfectly content to be a cis male, but he remembers a younger Johnny who would’ve had to ask themselves a lot of questions if they’d known about any of this.

But I digress. Y’all keep rockin’ on being you.

  19. There's just something inherently silly about playing the Game Boy version of Street Fighter II on a 40-whatever inch TV despite having multiple means of putting the arcade version up there.

I made my choices, and I stand by them.

  20. More games why not. I never got Uncharted Waters working, so I brought it back to the shop and exchanged it for even more stuff. And also four homebrew games I ordered a while ago finally arrived. Hooray!

Frontier Force (Master System): Neat looking shooter by fedi’s very own @helpcomputer0. Shooters were never my thing growing up, but lately I’ve been curious about them. Want to see what I missed I guess.

Bara Burū (Master System): Appears to be a single-screen action game in the vein of Bubble Bobble and the like. Looked interesting.

The Sword of Stone (Game Gear): I… don’t remember ordering this to be honest. Some sort of adventure RPG I guess? Probably thought I needed more portable RPGs in my collection. Like… any portable RPGs.

Heroes Against Demons (Game Gear): Bejeweled, but as a fantasy RPG.

Top Gear 2 (Super Nintendo): A racing game which seems to be well regarded. Or was it the first one everyone liked? Well this was the one the shop had.

Valis II and Valis IV (PC-Engine CD): Action platformers staring anime girls in bikini armour. I don’t often hear people talk about this series, but when they do, they speak highly of it. I can tell you already from testing them that the soundtracks are pretty sweet.
