    Just to confirm all stereotypes about the Netherlands: this morning I hopped on my bike early, to present the climate model at a conference for mathematics teachers. Right next to the conference location (located at 0 m above sea level of course) some of the bulb fields are flowering already.

    Some of the teachers indicated they liked the design of the graphs in the simulator a lot. So I hope they will start using this great material by Climate Interactive and MIT Sloan School of Management as well!

    10 jaar na het Parijsakkoord schiet het wereldwijde klimaatbeleid nog steeds te kort. Heb jij ideeën hoe het wél moet?

    Kom dan op maandagavond 19 januari naar Pakhuis de Zwijger voor Het Grote VN Klimaatsimulatie Spel. Je kruipt in de huid van een boer, oliemagnaat of politicus om extra klimaatbeleid voor te stellen en tegelijkertijd de belangen van jouw sector te vertegenwoordigen. De oplossingen die aan bod komen toetsen we live met de klimaatsimulator, ontwikkeld door wetenschappers van MIT Sloan School of Management en Climate Interactive.

    Last week I facilitated a Climate Action Simulation at UCo - Utrecht Community. Thanks to the policy proposals by the participants from Isle Utilities, Sustenuto - Strategic Sustainability & Circular Products, Kringloop Nederland, Hika advies and UCo - Utrecht Community, we managed to limit global warming in the climate simulator to 2,1 degrees.

    Even for sustainability professionals, the climate simulator provides new insights. The participants were surprised by the relatively large impact we can have on the climate if we limit methane emissions from landfills and fossil fuel extraction sites, for instance.

    Volgens het planbureau voor de leefomgeving is het "heel erg onwaarschijnlijk" dat Nederland de klimaatdoelen voor 2030 gaat halen.

    Hoe zou het gaan als jij zelf ons klimaatbeleid kon bepalen? Welke maatregelen wil jij invoeren? En wat heeft er eigenlijk een grotere impact: extra kerncentrales ⚛️ , meer bomen planten 🌳 , betere isolatie van gebouwen 🏠 ?

    Next week I'll host another climate action simulation for a group of international students at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (Hogeschool Utrecht).

    In my experience having international perspectives makes the collective learning even better. A recent example:

    Student from France: "I think we cannot solve the climate crisis with a democratic system. What we need is a benevolent dictator."
    Student who fled from a country where democracy is suppressed: "I would never want to live under a dictator anymore. Freedom is essential to me."

    I believe first person accounts like this help to get such messages across.

    The picture: a map of all the locations in the world where workshops with the simulator developed by MIT Sloan School of Management and Climate Interactive have taken place.
