Non ho idea di cosa sia successo, musicalmente parlando, nel 2023. No davvero. Ci vorrebbe una manciata di teste pensanti per tirar fuori qualcosa che assomigli anche solo vagamente a una narrazione coerente dell’evoluzione musicale. Potrei forse azzardare una sorta di fotografia dello stato di «immerdificazione» del mercato discografico (ben esemplificato, per quanto a me interessa, dalla nuova vendita di bandcamp con licenziamenti di contorno), ma andrei fuori dal seminato. Il seminato sono i miei ascolti e come evolvono nel tempo, ed è di questi che voglio parlare, senza far finta che rappresentino qualcosa da un punto di vista collettivo.
Di questi solchi, dei semi che vi pianto e delle piante che vi crescono, posso dire di avere un’idea più completa di quella che avevo negli anni passati. Ne so di più grazie a una certa premeditazione (cioè a scelte deliberate), che sempre di più informa ciò che ascolto: è un tentativo di navigare fermo attraverso la sovrapproduzione discografica e la sua linea temporale dove tutto è compresente (il passato che ritorna insistente, guidato dalla smania dell’industria di incassare e far profitti svuotando i conti in banca del pubblico adulto e benestante; il presente che sgomita per farsi notare; il futuro che non cogliamo più); è un tentativo di schivare il clamore e di attraversare il discorso dominante in autonomia per puntare dritto alla goduria, al divertimento e all’approfondimento; è un tentativo di decolonizzare, colorare, femminilizzare la mia discoteca (nel senso di togliere il bianco e il maschio in eccesso). Ne so di più anche grazie a ListenBrainz (grazie a @leonardo per la dritta), che da gennaio 2023 registra ciò che ascolto al PC con Strawberry Music Player e mi restituisce in cambio le statistiche. Ed è proprio su queste che voglio spendere due parole quest’anno (non sarà sempre così, promesso, ma devo assolutamente finire il giochino).
Questi sono gli album che ho ascoltato di più nel corso del 2023. Resta fuori tutto ciò che ho ascoltato in macchina, sul cellulare (pochissimo), o nello stereo di casa mentre mi facevo divorare dal divano, ma comunque la griglia qui sotto è, con buona approssimazione, la rappresentazione di ciò che più ho ascoltato di nuovo nel 2023: le novità sono padrone del PC, un po’ meno dello stereo e passano in minoranza in macchina, è la regola.

Shana Cleveland – ManzanitaUna statistica per me importante è il mappamondo degli artisti. Gli anglosassoni la fanno da padroni, è sempre stato così per me, ma ci sono altre zone del mondo che si fanno (faticosamente) avanti, e questa è una conseguenza di scelte precise mie da un lato (l’impegno ad ascoltare cose che vengono pubblicate alla periferia dell’«impero discografico»), e banalmente dell’internet e del sempre più facile accesso alle fonti dall’altro. C’è spazio per allargare gli orizzonti, ma parecchio, e questo mi pare un buon proposito per l’anno che è appena iniziato.
I «vincitori» sono i quattordici che vedete in cima e quest’anno, per la prima volta, non voglio citarne nessuno in particolare: che parli la lista. Un’ultima cosa però la devo aggiungere: il fediverso è diventato nel corso degli anni un luogo di consigli musicali impagabili, ed è una cosa fantastica per uno che veniva da twitter, infestato da anniversari di dischi storici e da compleanni di artisti morti. Quest’anno devo ringraziare in particolare @Watchfire per i Model/Actriz, @d10c4n3 per i Mandy, Indiana, @kappazeta per i Lankum e @surveyor3 per i Turin Horse. E tutto questo giusto per smentire ciò che scrivevo in apertura perché, per definizione, il passaparola contribuisce a costruire la dimensione collettiva dell’ascolto. Tesi, antitesi, manca la sintesi ma sticazzi, ecco il listone.

CW: The scientific method: detailed insights vs understanding the system
I am not so sure that we will ever be able to understand and predict accurately complex systems (ecosystems, stuff involving interactions of multiple living beings, let alone human behaviour).
Let me explain:------ Sorry, this got longer than intended 😅
TL;DR The scientific method is awesome, but specialized scientists struggle to get the pieces again together to understand complex systems.
-----------The scientific method was developed around testable hypotheses. For this, either you need experiments (usually in the lab) or large observational studies.
While I agree that the scientific method is probably the best way to explain things we have so far, sometimes dout crawls up my back and makes itself comfortable.
See, I am a soil scientist working on agricultural systems. Soil is an amazingly complex ecosystem due to its biological diversity and physical-chemical heterogeneity. When we add other factors that are completely common in nature (such as plants) and the plants exudate carbohydrates into the soil via their roots and the microbes use these substrates as energy source and mobilize nutrients from the soil, but meanwhile produce some signalling compounds that give information to the plants and the plants interact in every moment differently with the soil depending on the availability of water (affects soil chemistry and sorption on particle surfaces) and the plant and some other microbes start competing for some nutrients and ...
We are still only in the soil. Around one single plant root. No other plants, no animals, no farmers, no economy, ...
We need an entire research group including chemists, biochemists, multiple soil microbiologists, botanists, physicists, geologists et al. to try to decipher still rather basic processes.What I want to show here is that, although science is amazing and our tools are improving at an impressive pace, in practice I think that there is a frontier:
The human mind. Our capacity to understand things and to connect knowledge.The times of the universalist scholars scholars that had knowledge of many fields is history. In academy, we are getting more and more specialized (this is a trend in the structure of universities and research areas). Every advance in research technology allows us a closer look on one single thing. But then, to bring all this knowledge back together to understand the whole system is highly complex. It is also a matter of different scales (ok, here we could argue that some day we'll be able to deal with larger and larger datasets). Large research projects require a significant organizative effort organizing and moderating workshops to bring all the involved experts together and to relate the findings to the real world.
One of the main jobs of scientists is also to sell themselves. We need to convince the other folks (and ourselves?) that our research is important (and deserves funding).So, sometimes I see an indigenous farmer having a deep understanding about their soil and environment feel... humble and insignificant? A product of my society with its ideological baggage and biases?
(Of course, no need to be overly romantic, humans have shown to be perfectly capable of destroying their can local ecosystems without science).So, I still go with the scientific method. I like being a scientist and sometimes we really can do useful stuff. 🧑🔬🤓🦠🔬
(e.g. blocking some private jets :praxis_100: )Also, it is sad that it is difficult to have a public discussion about its limitations, as there are legions of anti-scientific trolls out there waiting to take single statement of doubt in their propaganda ("scientists are not 100% sure about climate change") or whatever.
