My feed is full of posts about #PosetteConf talks, but before #PGConfdev fades into memory, here are slides from my talk in Vancouver about #PostgreSQL blogging.
🙏 to @pgconfdev organizers for the opportunity. What an INCREDIBLE event, I had so much fun. I am not exaggerating in my use of ALLCAPS.
Also, yes, my talk was recorded, video coming soon! 📽️

It's a wrap! PASS Data Summit is a wrap, that is. And while there is bigger news in the tech industry right now (🤯)—I want to share my slides from my #PostgreSQL talk at #PASSDataSummit this week, on "How to get involved with Postgres without being a PG expert"
Also: 👏 Big 👏 thank 👏 you to the Redgate organizers & the amazing people I spent time with. It was quite nice to have some Postgres content at PASS this year!

For #TalkingPostgres @clairegiordano talked to EDB Global Solutions Architect @tchorix about his marvelous brain, and ability to make connections that help other people understand complex systems: https://talkingpostgres.com/episodes/the-fundamental-interconnectedness-of-all-things-with-boriss-mejias
Boriss wrote a blog post about the episode too: https://dev.to/bmejias/how-i-learned-to-embrace-my-chaotic-brain-4m3e #PostgreSQL

🎙️ New #TalkingPostgres #podcast Ep39 is out!
Adam Prout, distinguished engineer at #Microsoft, talked about his engineering journey from MemSQL to #HorizonDB shared-storage in #Postgres, & why good systems programmers are paranoid xx
Favorite bits include fast keyboards, being code reviewed by Adam, pathfinding, the Socrates paper, why code in Rust... so many moments. Adam is not only smart but also a good storyteller!

🎙️ New #TalkingPostgres #podcast Ep38 is out!
Gwen Shapira @gwenshap (co-founder at Nile) joined to talk about her journey with Oracle, NoSQL, & Postgres.
Talking to Gwen was so much fun, and we covered all manner of stories, including:
- If you're arguing with a customer, you've already lost.
- It's always the consultant's fault
- Use the PostgreSQL happiness hints when you're first starting with Postgres
- What happens when you try to add & remove a column 2000 times?
- How Nile was not originally meant to be a Postgres startup
- How even startups like Nile can give back to the Postgres open source project🎧 https://talkingpostgres.com/episodes/how-i-went-from-oracle-to-postgres-with-a-big-nosql-detour-with-gwen-shapira

🎙️ New #TalkingPostgres #podcast Ep37 is out!
Charles Feddersen, partner director of product for Postgres on Azure, joined me to talk about building Postgres services on Azure, his views on PM work, & his transition to Postgres 🐘 which started when he was building classic ASP apps with Microsoft Access back in Melbourne (back in the early 2000s). Lots of miles in between and all in the database space. It was fun!

My former Citus teammate Sumedh Pathak is back at Microsoft, leading our #PostgreSQL #OpenSource contributors team! And he just dropped this blog post about the upcoming #PGConfIndia event (which I am also going to, I'll be giving a talk) in Bengaluru in just 2 weeks time.
Last year there were over 500 people there, the conference was full of bustling energy & interest in #Postgres. I'm curious to see if the vibe is any different this year.
Really appreciate my marketing team's support as they funded a Diamond sponsorship for #Microsoft at PGConf India again this year.

🎙️ New #TalkingPostgres podcast Ep36 is out!
@tomasv , Postgres committer & long-time performance contributor, missed out on the Czechia/Canada hockey game 🏒 to talk about why it's so fun to hack on Postgres performance 🐘
I loved that Tomas said "dead ends are part of the game". And how he likened solving performance problems to solving puzzles. But not toy puzzles, he wants to spend his time doing meaningful things that have a real impact. Shout-outs to benchmarks, perf, DTrace, Brendan Gregg, Peter Geoghegan, & tdigest...

On my way to @fosdem and @fosdempgday & am really looking forward to reconnecting with open source and #PostgreSQL database friends. And maybe meeting some listeners of the #TalkingPostgres #podcast! Hope to see some of you there. 👋
This time, transiting through LHR. Am wearing sunglasses because I am a huge fan of the Timeshifter app, an absolute gamechanger for me in combating jetlag. (I suspect controlling the exposure to light is what makes it work…)

🎙️ New #TalkingPostgres #podcast Ep35 is out!
Luigi Nardi, the founder of an automated database tuning startup, joined to dig into how he got started with DBtune & why they chose PostgreSQL. We covered lots of ground, from the Jevons paradox to AI coding assistants to the appeal of Waymos.
As many of you know, word of mouth for podcasts like Talking Postgres is GOLD and so if this podcast is your jam, please be sure to tell your database & developer friends. Boosts welcome! 🚀

🎙️ New Talking Postgres podcast Ep34 is out!
Postgres committer & major contributor @melanieplageman of Microsoft joined to dig into what developers & the community will get out of @pgconfdev
This was lively, fun, informal. I hope you enjoy listening to Melanie and me banter. And while Melanie never wanted to be a conference organizer, she is on the organizing team & chairs the program committee for PGConf.dev—and had a lot to share about how things are changing, and what you can get out of the event. Also: in 2026 Postgres will turn 30!
Deadline soon: the PGConf.dev CFP will close on Jan 16.
Listen wherever you get your podcasts. (And feedback, recommendations, shout-outs, boosts all welcome)

I just learned this week about the Global PyLadies Conference—happening virtually this Fri & Sat Dec 5th and 6th.
And Dawn Wages @BajoranEngineer is one of the keynoters!
And Dingding Lu + Gauri Kasar (who I know from the Postgres team on Azure) are teaching a 1.5 hour workshop titled "Build Agentic AI with Semantic Kernel and Graph RAG on PostgreSQL" (on Sat Dec 6th at 10am PST)
I suppose it's not a surprise to see #PostgreSQL at a #Python conference!
If you're just learning about this PyLadies conference, check out the schedule! And here is the link to Dingding and Gauri's workshop re Postgres: https://pretalx.com/pyladiescon-2025/talk/QSJHYR/

When doing the soundcheck and getting ready to record Ep33 of the #TalkingPostgres #podcast on Discord—with guest Rob Emanuele and co-producer @asw—I took this screenshot of the 3 of us!
Recording this episode (just published yesterday) was so fun—starting from Rob's origin story as a developer busking on Venice Beach.
But yes if you're interested in the new VS Code extension for PostgreSQL you will definitely learn what it's for and why it matters in the episode too!
Plus a surprising bit about Total Request Live near the end. Enjoy!
(and be sure to share with friends because word of mouth is one of the best ways for podcasts—especially niche Postgres podcasts—to get discovered)

🎙️ New Talking Postgres #podcast Ep33 is published!
Microsoft engineer Rob Emanuele joined to discuss building a dev experience for Postgres in VS Code + geospatial queries, guitar busking, creativity, & agentic coding.
Of course he explains what the new VS Code extension for Postgres helps you to do (and yes, it works with any Postgres, whether on-prem or in any cloud.)
But my favorite bits were the guiding principles used when building this new extension—and exactly how Rob's own coding workflow has changed dramatically.
And we talked about failure! And music. And PostGIS.

Happening on Wed 5 Nov at 10am PST, a LIVE recording of Ep33 of the #TalkingPostgres #podcast with guest Rob Emanuele, to talk about "Building a dev experience for Postgres in VS Code"
Rob has such an interesting background (esp. with PostGIS and planetary data) and I'm curious to learn how he got involved in this project—and what it was like to create this new VS Code extension!
