  1. The Dipshits of Magic are back! Excited to be playing Diablo II: Resurrected together with Corndan, Ryyudo and tinahacks today at 16:00 UTC. Featuring also Sakkra as our guest star!

While Diablo II is well loved by a few of us, it’ll be the first time experiencing Diablo II for three of us. I’ve only really played the first game myself and that was a good while back. Should be a good time coming back to Diablo!

  7. I learned how to write music on a ‘Polyend Tracker Mini’, which is a portable battery powered tracker that you can take with you and has everything to write music on the go. I’ve played with #ImpulseTracker some back in the DOS days so while learning the interface took an evening, I got most of a song written in about two days.

Very fun inspiration for experimentation! So here’s a quirky song inspired by #StarControl and the kind of theme songs they wrote for all the different races you can meet and really neatly communicated the feels of the kind of a society you were in contact with.

A chance to imagine a whole new first contact! aviancer.bandcamp.com/track/ha

I also swapped over to Bandcamp from SoundCloud after they opted everyone in on the whole AIGen training train, so I guess this is the launch of that also! All the #creativity! ❤️

  11. I also just recently got my Project Babble tracker which should enable me to have natural expressions in VR and in particular more accurate mouth tracking which is going to add a lot of expressiveness ^^

So far the experience is pretty unpolished, but much can be forgiven for an open source project. Plus it means people can just build their own. Right now I’m getting a lot of incorrect detection, but others have gotten really good results with it and I think it’s just down to going through the calibration process to detect correctly.

I still also need to get my USB-C splitter cable so I can have audio and the tracker running at the same time, since my Beyond 2E only has one accessory USB port. But hopefully already next week I can have better results!

My avatar also needs some work too since I can’t see the required parameters, I need to figure out how to get it working correctly. I think it’ll be worth it though since I want to do more VR stuff again.

  12. I run a weekly community co-op event where we fly #DCS, most recently often also some #NuclearOption. Most recently we’ve been doing a play through with a rotary bent of a custom campaign I’ve been making together with @NeneExists.

Here’s some screencaps from some eventful bits from last weeks flight ^^ Got another one coming up tomorrow.

  13. Last night had a first, I’ve been doing a challenge where I try to start up every DCS module I get without the manual or guides. This time it was the C-130 Hercules which is a very complex boy! It was also the first time I did this together with my co-pilot Nene, who also had no idea what we were getting into.

Going for a minimal spoilers approach with zero knowledge to start off with - we got the engines running in about two and half hours, and the aircraft correctly configured and in the air in about four hours! Making for a rather chill and fun aviation hangout with the chat. Thanks everyone for being there 💕

Here’s the recording of the stream m.twitch.tv/videos/2633777076 which I will later also upload to YouTube so it won’t disappear.

  14. Last community co-op DCS event I got to introduce a few new people learning to fly, as well as we did some coordinated dismantling of air defenses with the more experienced pilots to provide them with an easier target to learn on.

There was some fun air to air combat opportunities as well as some good air to ground time to be had, so here’s a few shots from the event!

Been also learning how to fly the newly released MiG-29A and discovering some new challenges with how to employ it on DCS as it was never intended as a air superiority fighter, but more to coordinate with ground support. The sensors on the plane are pretty dreadful and the HUD modes hide critical information when you need it the most, it’s certainly an interesting challenge :) Will be interesting to see if the recent fixes to the radar and IRST helped.

  15. Annual reminder to test and check the storage charge on your LiPo and Li-Ion batteries, especially during the winter if they’ve not seen use for some while.

Quad batteries normally should retain charge well when charged to storage capacity, and should never be stored long term at high or low charge.

  16. Alright! After quite an ordeal including replacing memory modules in my 486 and eventually building a lab vm, I got to show off true multitasking on top of DOS! This was accomplished using a fairly obscure piece of software called DesqView originating all the way back from 1985, while the version I used was from 1996 and built to work with the QEMM8 memory manager.

We had a lot of fun exploration on stream seeing what would work and even ran graphical programs side be side by text mode things, with the full ability to swap between them. There was some palette corruption during the swapping that kinda just adds a neat look to it all. Also some truly memorable midi crimes occurred :)

  20. DESQView unfortunately still exhibits some significant memory corruption. I went as far as replacing the RAM in the system with a configuration the motherboard explicitly supports (32MB from 16+16), as well as disabling all CPU caching incase it was a timing problem - but it does not seem to help. Part of actually working with real retro hardware I guess!

I will have to dump the systems drive and see about getting things from there imported under a VM instead, it looks promising on both counts initially but I don’t know how true to hardware 86Box is on this level - so we’ll see. Still very much want to get to explore multitasking on DOS.

  25. Continuing DESQView (DV) adventure and making multitasking work on #DOS. Last nights stream I installed DV and we listened to a bunch of rocking midi music while teaching people about DOS memory management ❤️

We kept having issues that look like memory corruption in the “open menu” where random binary appeared in the command list, and dv was often complaining that “desqview.dvo” was missing or bad. Rather strange and the behavior seems inconsistent and dependent on memory allocations. Quite a few system crashes but we got to see two, three programs running side by side!

I already re-installed QEMM8.01 and upgraded it to QEMM8.03, to make sure there should be no issue with the memory manager. I also enabled QEMM stealth mode and the recommended options for DV (eg. partial DOS-UP).

MFT provides some convenient memory mapping details so I was able to investigate where the caught exceptions are happening, and it largely seems to be falling into memory space (1238:34FA) that shouldn’t be used by hardware devices (need to confirm) or DOS. Oddly enough DV itself doesn’t list loading anything into that space either, so it could be launched application space?

Still seeing crashes so unsure if the issue is in my hardware, but I really want to see this thing running properly ^^ I think I’m going to replace the RAM sticks in the system next and see if that helps.

Some spoilers since this is the rather challenging boss fight at the end of a game loop. Bit of a slow burner (~5min) since it took a bit to figure out the moves for the turn being as tired as I was, but worth it ^_^
