  1. CW: Human rights breaches

Last wk I wrote about the hypocrisy of a UK care provider 'celebrating' their apparent award wining care, while people they are paid to support lived non-lives.

Yesterday CQC, the UK #healthcare #SocialCare regulator published another report into a service of theirs providing inadequate care.

14 breaches of regulations, 10 for almost a year georgejulian.co.uk/2022/12/04/

One relative told us "[Family member's] life has become significantly smaller since living there, they can no longer do the things they used to enjoy doing and have lost a lot of skills."

  3. CW: Award winning care that breaches human rights

I hate awards. For numerous reasons, mostly because they're self selecting, inherently biased, subjective, and usually a big fat money maker.

Today I wrote about Achieve Together, winners of 2022 LaingBuisson Award, and the inadequate care they're delivering, according to CQC georgejulian.co.uk/2022/11/29/

I'll do a thread too, with replies unlisted so pls boost if you think ppl would be interested

  4. Today's review of two inadequate care homes for learning disabled and autistic people in England, as judged by the regulator, the Care Quality Commission.

  5. CW: Inadequate care

Since July 2022 I've been reporting on Twitter, detail of care rated inadequate for #learningsdisabled and #autistic ppl, by the Care Quality Commission in England.

I've written a post about the current state of care in England (based on 1 Nov CQC data release) here georgejulian.co.uk/2022/11/20/

I'm interested in whether people would wish to see inadequate care highlighted here in the same way? Pls share, TY

  6. @GeorgeJulian I think it's largely a free-for-all with freedom to swap if you wish. I guessed a lot of my Scottish twitter pals would choose it and I've been pleased to see a core of auld pals as well as meeting new peeps.

Bonus: George is also an amazing #craftivist so possibly some magical/colourful pictures to come too... (no pressure GJ).

#100DaysOfAirFrying Day 41 and finally had our xmas dinner after our xmas plans were changed short notice on xmas eve with a trip up country.

Yesterday was Riverford Belly Pork cooked in the #airfryer for the best crackling ever. Used the integrated temperature probe to judge how long to cook for.

Spuds also done in the fryer, everything else steamed. So good, defo turning into an #airfryerevangelist which maybe should read as #airfryerwanker 😂😂😂

  14. CW: Autism Suicidality

I spent 3wks reporting 19yr old Chris Nota's Article 2 inquest in September, before it had to be adjourned due to Essex NHS Trust failing to disclose documents to investigators they'd commissioned to conduct an investigation.

The coroner, Sean Horstead, sat for 3 days this week, concluding numerous failings and missed opportunities probably more than minimally contributed to Chris's death

  18. Couple more pics #100DaysOfAirFrying

Two are my latest dirty secret, homemade croutons, first were stale sourdough loaf, cut into rustic cubes, half drizzled in olive oil, half walnut oil, both with salt flakes on top. 10mins at 160 in #airfryer, final 5mins at 180

Second pic is walnut cob leftovers, drizzled in walnut oil, my soup was ready so I just went straight to 10mins at 180 and they were perfect.

Lastly beetroot wedges, peel, olive oil drizzle, #airfry at 180 for 15mins

  19. Days 22-40 of #100DaysOfAirFrying and I still wasn't 100% so #cooking was limited, and ended up unexpectedly away for xmas so it wasn't used for that.

Here's a few pics of its offerings in that period, death by potato 😂 and a Boston Banger - then I'll post again with my new fave #airfryer indulgence

  20. Day 21 #CQCAdvent

Professionals and family members, we spoke with attributed the positive outcomes people achieved to the managers and staff who placed people in the centre of the service.

Recruitment had not been difficult for the provider due to the good reputation they built on the market. They received applications without the need for advertising.

  21. Days 16 - 21 of #100DaysOfAirFrying and I was mostly ill, so wasn't really cooking or eating. I did reheat some beige food at one point, and I made another pear and apple crumble. Pics attached.

  22. Day 20 #CQCAdvent

Staff worked in very close partnership with parents and carers to take positive risks which resulted in children and young people trying new activities, acquiring new skills and growing in confidence.

One young person with additional learning needs and physical disabilities was able to increase their use of indoor play equipment and had gone on to use further play activities

  23. Day 19 #CQCAdvent

People were supported by a consistent staff team who knew them well.

    The operations director told us,

"The people we support are truly respected and valued as individuals. When our teams are seeing the results [of people achieving goals], they have been incredibly proud of their achievements and I believe this has continued to contribute to our very low attrition rate."

  24. Day 18 #CQCAdvent

The provider used picture cards, non-verbal cues, social stories, group discussions with families and informal settings with others who used the service.

One person who used the service sat on the board of directors as a direct advocate for others who used the service.

  25. Day 17 #CQCAdvent

[Excellent] guidance for staff in the care plans, around how to recognise people's emotions and their mood state.

This included identifying when people needed encouragement, support, or time alone.

...worked hard to support people's morning routine in a positive way, as they had recognised the importance of this in determining whether someone would go on to have a positive day.

  26. Day 16 #CQCAdvent

Health professionals and advocates working with the service, praised the care provided.

"The one question you always ask yourself is would you want your family member to be at this placement, I would say yes without hesitation."

An advocate said, "If every service was of the quality of Fairmont then people with learning disabilities would be a lot better off."

  27. Day 15 #CQCAdvent

People told us their relatives always looked forward to visiting the service and expressed happiness when they knew they were due to attend.

The service understood people's communication needs and worked to help people develop these.

The atmosphere was very homely and welcoming.

One person told us "staff really care about you and are funny".

One staff member told us "We work in their home and we all absolutely respect them as they should be respected".

  29. Day 14 and Day 15 of #100DaysOfAirFrying and I've nothing to report.

The #AirFryer has stayed off, mostly because I've been back to back with work the last two days and living off toast. I still had flapjacks so had no need for treats either.

Am off out for a curry tonight so have no need for tea, but will see if it gets used again tomorrow.

  30. Day 13 #CQCAdvent

One person with a complex health condition had been identified to move into an older person's nursing home for their health needs to be met.

The service worked responsively with health and social care professionals to develop the staff teams' skills and knowledge so the person could remain at the home and not move into accommodation with people who were much older than them.
