    "Inside ‘the new American fascism’

Katherine Stewart explores the strange alliance seeking to impose its antidemocratic vision on the US—one Moms for Liberty meeting at a time.

Katherine Stewart is a veteran chronicler of evangelicals in politics. Her first book examined the *Good News Club*, an organization that sought to hold Bible studies in public elementary schools to expose children to an evangelical worldview. Her next book, *The Power Worshippers*, traced the role of evangelical Christians in Donald Trump’s rise. In *Money, Lies, and God*, she explores the strange alliance seeking to impose an antidemocratic economic and moral vision on the United States.

Stewart argues that this movement, which she calls 'the new American fascism,' has multiple factions, including socially conservative evangelical Christians and ultra-wealthy individuals seeking government deregulation and the privatization of public services in order to amass more wealth with which to influence politics. These two groups haven’t always worked together. Evangelical activism used to focus more narrowly on cultural issues such as school prayer, restricting abortion access, and fighting against gay and lesbian rights. But the more attention they gave economic policy, the more wealthy allies they gained—allies who, thanks to runaway inequality, have deeper and deeper pockets.

Billionaires—including the Koch brothers, the DeVos family in Michigan, and Richard Uihlen, chair of the Bradley Foundation in Wisconsin—contribute massively to conservative political organizations, and some, such as Betsy DeVos (who is both a billionaire and an evangelical), have been elevated to influential government positions."

  10. More neighborhood campaign yard signs. I like that the #HarrisWalz one includes an American flag. Patriotism does not belong to #cristofascists and #RightWingNutJobs. The Spanish language sign, at the very least, is a #NeverTrumper. See alt text for translation. Apologies to senor Herrera for my poor recollection of junior high Spanish. Also, that first word I learned from #CheechAndChong anyway.

Just leave it up to the rest of the fucking globe to sort your shit out.

  12. The Handmaid's Tale S06 (2025)

  13. Not hiding this because folks need to see this, but CW for child abuse and the evils of American Christfascism. And speaking ill of the dead, which I will gladly do. I can't speak ill enough of him.

James Dobson is a major reason why *this*. Even his evangelical friends and radio cohosts thought he was too cruel. I'm glad he died before he could see his creation of Cristofascism come to fruition. He's one of the worst human beings to ever live.

Not content to let trauma-informed culture break the cycle of domestic abuse, he perpetuated child abuse by teaching millions of parents *how*. He even sold a device for beating children called "The Rod." (As in "spare the rod, spoil the child.") He advocated for what was known as "blanket training," used to break the will of children starting in infancy. The goal was to create a mindless being who would not cry when beaten, who would jump to with a "Yes sir!" on *any* command.

The core cruelties of white American evangelicalism in 2025 can be traced to many men, but this man was its face and kindly voice on the radio. When I speak of #AbuseCulture, this is what I mean. Dobson is the black hole which emitted its unholy light even as the revelations of science and open culture attempted to eliminate childhood trauma — Dobson raised its banner and pulled millions of Christians in, not just evangelicals, but anyone who trusted a figure promoting "Family Values," parents who would not on their own be able or even willing to enact such cruelties upon their own children, but under Dobson's manipulations, broke the will of their children...

...children who grew up and abused their own children, who are now pastors and sheriffs and senators and ICE thugs who want to make this reality for all of us.

That is the legacy of this horrible, horrible man.

I don't wish eternal hell on anyone, but I wouldn't mind if this particular creature experienced every pain he caused.

  17. Starting reviewing all the #Phish concerts of #1995 on my blog at christoff.re tomorrow!

I did all the "work" stuff of it all in advance:
    - 82 draft blog posts that are pre-populated with everything but my review data
    - my own custom spreadsheet (ods format) for 1995 concerts
    - audio files downloaded, metadata updated, and playlists created for each concert for offline listening

So, now I simply get to listen, take notes, relisten maybe, update draft blog post, and publish!
