Some observations on antipatterns in Incident Response:
https://bigbeardygeek.com/posts/im-antipatterns/Do you recognise the Kicked Anthill, All Hands On Deck, or Nothing To See Here patterns?
Any others I can add to the list? -

A shimmering sea of flashlight stars during Cornfield Chase. A glorious moment in #annalapwood 's Moon and Stars #prom at the Albert Hall last night.

Just finished my first deodorant refill from http://getfussy.com and am pretty pleased so far.
It took about a month to get through the stick, and the "Wide Eyed" fragrance was citrus and pepper as advertised.
Having previously relied on Sure Maximum Protection, I was worried that July would be a risky month to switch product, but it was fine. No complaints from me or anyone else.
So nice to be binning a small bit of compostable card instead of a handful of plastic. #fussy #ecopits

I'm not a massive #reddit user. Correction: wasn't.
I contributed to a few relevant subs where I could share some of my grizzled hard-won experience with noobs looking for help, especially around #NAS, #SRE, and #android.
But I did this exclusively through #redditisfun aka RIF, one of the affected third party apps.
I can live without the scrolling, karma, and drama. Hell, life got better when I turned off the Google inbox/feed on my phone.
I've found more interesting people and stuff here.

https://blog.relyabilit.ie/sre-in-the-real-world/ is a handy resource for #xoogler #sre folks.
As a 4-year inmate of the "real world" asylum outside the chocolate factory, I agree with vast swathes of that doc.
Many things are weirdly and inexplicably different. Reliance on logging. Haphazard authentication, authorization, and delegation. Multi repos.
But the teams I've worked with have all been grateful for better dashboards, easier tooling, post-incident reviews, SLOs, rate limits, build-at-head, etc.

A post-incident review had phrases like "an engineering mistake caused ..." and "the offending PR was reverted".
I suggested removing the judgemental language and sticking to the plain facts.
Just got a big thank you from the author:
"I would never have written it that way if it was about somebody else"Not only is the doc now much better (we got some good lessons for everyone), we're both having much better days for that small bit of feedback.

CW: Mastodon noob grumble about duplicate posts
#Mastodon needs an #idempotence marker for toots.
Just had a Publish timeout, so I naturally retried.
Et voila: duplicate toots.I'm kinda disappointed a network-failure-aware system doesn't already have this. Or maybe it does and the mastodon app doesn't use it?
(This one just timed out too. Will I get a dupe?)
x 3Can there not be some kind of async callback after a timeout to check if the operation succeeded after all?
