Using this virtual exhibit in the classroom: "When Women Lost the Vote" explores women's franchise and disenfranchisement in NJ in the early republic. Students seemed to respond well to the site overall, so sharing for those that might be interested.
Trying to do a better job at teaching women's early political involvement alongside/around "republican motherhood" and similar narratives. Fits right into parallel discussions of the franchise and disenfranchisement among black communities in the period, questions of status for previously enslaved persons in states that are passing emancipating laws in the north, etc.

On this Election Day, we're looking at This Is What Democracy Looked Like: A Visual History of the Printed Ballot by Alicia Yin Cheng.
The book is an illustrated history of printed ballot design, featuring US ballots from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These slips of paper, which Cheng calls "the most fugitive ephemera", reflect the attitudes and atmosphere around the political elections of the time, with designs that ranged from ostentatious and colorful public displays to overtly anti-immigrant and anti-Black illustrations.
