  1. RAGE MACHINERY

Australia is having trouble with social media companies over hate speech, and I understand the concern.

    I don’t defend hate speech.

I think it is ugly, stupid, cruel, and usually comes from fear wearing boots.

But I also don’t think social media platforms can be expected to become the conscience of humanity.

    I left Facebook years ago.

I still look at X sometimes, but I never comment or post there. I am a ghost.

Mastodon is the only place I post now, partly because it feels more human. There is less of the rage machinery, less algorithmic theatre, less pressure to perform outrage for attention.

    That matters to me.

I don’t want my nervous system trained by billion-dollar platforms that profit from keeping people reactive.

Threats, harassment, incitement, and targeted abuse need limits.

    Of course they do.

But if every unpleasant, offensive, stupid, or hateful thing has to be removed before anyone sees it, then we are asking the world to become padded so that we never have to grow a spine.

    That worries me.

    Not because cruelty is acceptable.

Because fragility is becoming a culture.

There is a difference between being harmed and being offended.

There is a difference between protection and infantilising people.

There is a difference between asking for basic decency and expecting the whole world to be redesigned around our wounds.

I would rather build discernment, inner steadiness, and the ability to look at ugliness without becoming it.

    Block.

    Mute.

    Report real abuse.

    Walk away.

But don’t hand your nervous system to strangers on the internet.

And don’t expect a corporation to do the inner work for you.

  4. How many institutions operate at this level of maturity? How many pay lip service to a politically correct "mission" (education, patient care, research) when they really pursue (and reward) something quite different (grant productivity and market share)? Small wonder, indeed, that many sense the futility of gathering data to support decisions that the institution has no will to undertake. Why put band-aids on cancer? Because it looks like you're trying, and hides the ugliness of disease.

  6. If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until you can hardly bear to look at it.

  8. Ah, the riveting saga of 'FreeDroidWarn' on GitHub—another thrilling installment in the endless parade of half-baked code repositories, complete with a UI uglier than a 90s website. 🎨🚧 But don't worry, #GitHub Copilot is here to write "better" code with #AI, because, apparently, we're all just glorified button clickers now. 🤖💡

  10. I know that as a Serious Person I should be commenting on Trump's irrational and destructive tariff policy announcements, but I am currently stunned by the photo at the head of this piece.

  14. Ah, child and youth, if you knew the bliss which resides in the taste of knowledge, and the evil and ugliness that lies in ignorance, how well you are advised to not complain of the pain and labor of learning.

  18. „In the 1930s, make-up legend Max Factor came up with an ingenious invention combining #phrenology, #cosmetics, and a pseudo-scientific approach to analyze a woman’s facial flaws. This is the #Beauty Micrometer, a Clockwork Orange-style device that claimed to measure facial #ugliness.“

What a horrible contraption and mindset, right?

So happy that we have surveillance-capitalist vc-funded crap-app algorithms for that today. 😌

  19. . @aral You have to be non-techie, non-political, non-activist, not know google history of #ugliness, not read/seen how these #monopolistic #dataGatherers are harming commoners. Of course there are plenty of exceptions but I would say that's the core base and then there are those who have resigned in their fight (to protect their data) or accepted it as #fate...!
