  4. Someone looked through the Terms of Service () docs of a lot of services and presents them in a nice privacy showing color coded way.

Seems all the big ones (social media, google, amazon,...) are there and several smaller ones (VPN, browser, ...), too.

Nothing you do on Tiktok stays private, not even *private messages*. Tiktok uses tracking technologies and stores precise user GPS locations. They may also store all this data about their users anywhere in the world.

🟥 All this gets them an E rating on ToS;DR.

    "
    ToS;DR Funding Round
We have avoided making this post for the longest time, however, we have reached a point where ToS;DR is at risk.

    What's happening?
Our server cost totals to around 9500$ a year. ToS;DR simply does not have the funds to finance this and thus our team members pay for the majority of it out of their own pocket.
This has been fine for a long time but as ToS;DR grows and expands (which is what we want and believe is best for our project) it is simply not working anymore.
We are fine with contributing to the majority of the sum, however, this is risque for the future and your support guarantees the safety of ToS;DR.

Why are the servers so expensive?
ToS;DR gets roughly 75 million requests per month. We do not know this number exactly (as we do not track users), but this is calculated based on the bandwidth that goes out per month.
This costs a lot of money to maintain so it properly scales, is always online and we have backup servers in case one goes down.
Soon, our long awaited, most anticipated feature launches: Browser Extension 2.0. We are estimating in our first month alone this extension will cost us 440000 API Requests/Month or more.

    Why should I care?
ToS;DR is not just a service you see. It is not just an annotation tool. It is a tool giving users around the world more privacy and transparency where big corporations simply fail.
We have been running for more than 11 years (wow!) and want to continue on for a long time in the future. However, as it stands, ToS;DR cannot exist without your help.
This is not just like Wikipedia, where we'd be fine if no one donated for a year. This is more dire.

What happens if no one donates?
We will try to keep ToS;DR alive but we have to cut back on many components. The first to go, for example, would be our Matrix Server that many people (maybe even you!) use. This would continue on and ToS;DRs quality, reliability and more would suffer.

    What changes are coming up?
ToS;DR will start doing quarterly donation-runs where we ask all visitors of the website and our social platforms to donate. We know this is annoying so we are working on making this process as un-intrusive as possible, but the step is still neccessary to fund our servers, development, licenses etc.

    Please help keep ToS;DR alive!
If everyone who saw this only donated 1$, our funding would be secured for years. With 2$, our future development would be funded as well.

  14. Excerpt from an other wise private message:

@ToSDR #TOSDR tosdr.org/ is an amazing service, so I'm happy to promote it and that this has given me a chance to reacquaint myself with it.

I was sure I had a plugin/extension that was giving me TOS information. I thought it was #DDG Privacy Essentials, but it's not. I think I used to have #EFF 's Privacy Badger, but that does not seem to do it. So, now, I have installed the TOSDR extension to get that TOSDR goodness back 😉

  15. wanted to really quickly post about ToS;DR, it's actaully free software, and they even say it here:

and it's a great extenstion, especially if your looking at bigger sites, to get a real quick look at the TOS.

  16. Why would anyone promote zoom?

    Zoom:

    • is non-free software
    • does not use open standards
    • is a big tech company
    • has a history with privacy scandals
    • has awful terms of service https://tosdr.org/en/service/2198
    • can not be run on your own server
    • seems to cooperate with china to prosecute christians
    • and probably makes money on selling your data

We have alternatives which are not perfect but useable such as:

    • jitsi
    • big blue button
    • jami (does not require a server)
    • wahay (does not require a server)
    • mumble (can used in tails for more privacy)

  20. @koherecoWatchdog @humanetech @aral @travisfw Have you ever used any of those services you just listed? Why won't you use them? Did you read their terms of service and in the end you decided #NopeNotForMe?

I've tried these services and I'm gonna stick to them and its not because I want to antagonize you.

I'm gonna stick to them because they allow me to donate something to someone instead of not being able to donate anything to anyone.

Though I can understand your frustration.

  21. Бразерный плагин "Terms of Service; Didn’t Read" (Условия обслуживания; не читал) объясняет своё назначение (перевод мой):

“Я прочитал и согласен с Условиями” — самая большая ложь в вебе. Мы стремимся исправить это. “Terms of Service; Didn't Read” — инициатива для защиты прав пользователей оценивать правила и политику конфиденциальности сайта, от очень хороших (класс A) до очень плохих (class E).

  22. "Terms of Service; Didn’t Read" web browser plugin explains its purpose:

“I have read and agree to the Terms” is the biggest lie on the web. We aim to fix that. “Terms of Service; Didn't Read” is a user rights initiative to rate and label website terms & privacy policies, from very good (class A) to very bad (class E).
