“Do not underestimate small problems: one crack can sink a ship. Do not underestimate small creatures: one fly can poison you. Do not underestimate the small-minded: one petty fool can plunder a nation.”
attributed to Guan Yinzi, the gate guard who allegedly stopped Laozi as he was abandoning civilization and got him to write down the Dao; translation mine. https://ctext.org/dictionary.pl?if=en&id=280050#sid20

Hi, everyone! I'm pretty sure you don't know why they are doing that. This applies in most instances.

TIL that there are computer science professors that run 50-100 unique shell commands per working day.
How? Do they send emails with `cat`?

If you ask for technical advice, responding to it with 'That's gobbledygook' or some similar expression feels really disparaging. #subtweet

So what do we call it? I refuse to say subtoot on moral grounds. Obviously, if it's here, it's not a subtweet, so I have been using subpost but that seems wrong, too! Or, at least, it doesn't roll off the tongue.
Halp!!1!

What is a fediverse-neutral word for "subtweet"? People here use "subtoot", but that's based on Mastodon's "toot", which is no longer officially used.
"Subpost" doesn't sound quite right. But I guess that's it?

There is a very annoying bird (sorry bird) being very chirpy in the vicinity. If I could identify bird calls, I am sure it is a common one. I really wish it would take a break. We get the message, bird. #subtweet

If proposing a space mission that has to be done in 5 years and must launch in 3-4 years; you may not want to suggest an entirely new spacecraft design.
This is not regarding any particular mission proposal. I've just been listening to a lot of mission plans today.

2019 October 17A geomagnetic storm like the one in 1859 would cause significant problems; and we should make some efforts to mitigate that risk.
No, such a geomagnetic storm would not do anything remotely close to "fry all the electronics in the world".

So every frakkin’ zombie movie hits way harder as we enter Year Five of an airborne pandemic that most people won’t even acknowledge at this point. WTF #subtweet

I have the same thought about sports ball as I do about religions - fine if you love it, happy for you. I'll pay just enough attention so that I can have a conversation about it, but don't try to force it on me.

#subtweetSpace based solar power is great for powering things in space.
It is not useful for powering things on Earth.
And groups still trying to make it happen seems like a distraction from actual efforts to switch to more sustainable energy sources on the ground.

why, whenever discussion of copyright scrolls across my feed, does someone crawl out of their hole to cry "copyright trolls" which we all know means in 2012 they stole some blog photo off Google Image Search instead of paying a buck for a stock photo & they're still bitter they got caught
& then somebody else crawls out to say an unknown should be able to get famous & optioned within 7 years so why do we need copyright
🙄
why they don't do it & show us how -

I read that Raytheon is still using very disturbing euphemisms for profiting from people being killed.

#subtweetThe euphemisms used in military contractor recruiter emails are very disturbing.
No, random recruiter, I will not work on projects intended for killing people. And have you given any thought to what your employer expecting "significant global business growth" means?

I've followed a policy in general on failed relationships.
I don't talk about my ex.

Really do not need so many police, #TwinCities.
QT Michael Busch @michael_w_busch
2020 June 11If what appears to be a minor traffic accident results in four police patrol vehicles immediately showing up, your community does not need so many police on patrol.

Today I read someone suggesting emulating the "Treaty of Tordesillas" in space.
Don't do that.

When promoting space resource utilization, do not use colonialism / imperialism as inspirations. -

If you are an employer and have an employee who is doing their job quite well remotely, you _really_ should not pressure them to return to working in-person.
