#sefgw — Public Fediverse posts

So, what happens when you build a universe in which you can tell Star Wars-y stories or Star Trek-y stories or Expanse-y stories that is explicitly licensed in a way that encourages fan productions, remixes, re-use (and, most importantly, mandates that future contributes Expand the commons!)?

That's what I hope to find out with the solar federation, #JupitersGhost and even #SEFGW (that is The Space Explorers Field Guide Wiki, another thing that will see the light of day once #JG is more self sustaining.)

I suspect that what happens is that we release a podcast about people in space for a while and not much else, and then maybe the thing grows some legs? Who knows!

And then there's a bunch of TV shows we're working on.

In several old threads I talked about doing a Superhero show. We've written and storyboarded the first episode. I have it mostly cast. We're working on some sets and props right now. I dunno when it will start shooting, but I'm excited for it to happen.

There's also #sefgw and the Expedition Sasquatch TV show, and lots of other video projects in various states of completion.

Some things I want for our #sefgw installation:

- working ship to ship communication
- some kind of personal communicator trinket (functional is better.)
- at least one other practical prop (side arm, scanner, scifi tool, etc.)

@ifixcoinops especially if we lean in to the #sefgw aesthetic of diy ships cobbled together with spare parts!

Alright, it's time to listen to Aesop Rock's Spirit World Field Guide and to think about what the #SEFGW TV show looks like, and what the software might look like to power the game, and how it ties in to Jupiter's Ghost.

I'm thinking more and more about #SpaceLARPCafe within the context of the universe of the Space Explorer's Field Guide (wiki) ( #sefgw ) and how those two ideas could co-exist.

The Space Explorer's Field Guide Wiki (#SEFGW) I've talked about at length, and there's nothing new to share about the premise.

It's a space show inspired by FTL, Y'all among other things.

I have costumes, and guidelines for set dressing and shooting so that it's easier for multiple contributors. I'm going to try to shoot a few segments as examples, and then pass it out for the wider world.

Of the show ideas I discussed most recently, the ones that we're actively moving forward on at the moment are:

- Doctor Deathray (which isn't a show I mentioned, but something a friend wrote, which I am helping to produce.)
- The Space Explorer's Field Guide Wiki (#SEFGW)
- Captain Video
- Tales from the Space Corps.

What follows is a brief overview of each one, and an update on current status.

As far as the format of the episodes goes, I've been thinking about this a lot.

A lot of web series get caught in the "monologue to camera" space.

This works really well sometimes (The Guild started with this format and was a lot of fun. Jupiter's Ghost #jg will basically make use of this format, but in podcast form) and I had originally planned #SEFGW to heavily lean on that convention.

There's room for that in the field guide, but there's room for other stuff too.

#SEFGW premise:

The year is 2030. 5 years ago, someone uploaded plans for a DIY interstellar engine to hacker news, and ... It worked. It could be assembled for peanuts.

The american empire has collapsed. The world is in chaos. Interstellar flight is possible, easy, cheap, not remotely safe.

It's a vast, nearly infinite cosmos. All of it is basically uncharted.

A weird combination of hardcore nerds and long haul hikers are out there documenting it and contributing back to the wiki.

The Space Explorer's Field Guide (wiki) #SEFGW will be a low budget, partially crowd sourced, CC-BY-SA ( #ccbysa #creativeCommons), science fiction TV series about our world, more or less, when space travel is attainable for anybody with a basic understanding of soldering and $200.

It's heavily inspired by Aesop Rock's Spirit World Field Guide, Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and the anthology FTL, Y'all.

The Space Explorers Field Guide (wiki) #SEFGW is probably the most versatile of the shows we're considering producing in terms of potential content, participation, and costuming.

It's not #jg #jupitersGhost, but it should very much have the same participatory nature. That means costuming needs to be replicable for distributed casts and crews, and needs to be cheap.
