Thank you for listening to #RSIndividual all about surprise Individual Masanori Takeuchi! No Individual next week, but don't worry about that. Keep listening for more #RSWinterFest right after this.
-
Masanori Takeuchi worked on aeroplane games like Sky Target, Airline Pilots and Sega Strike Fighter, but you probably know him for one of his last works, After Burner Climax. For both his very game and last known game, @Hiro_H10th also worked on it.
#RSIndividual -
Masanori Takeuchi, the heavy metal king of SEGA, mapped out some early 2000’s rock/metal albums for beginners, with 1 love it/hate it inclusion. Have any of our metalhead listeners heard all of these?
#RSIndividual -
segaGT2002 has a really diverse soundtrack, but we have to wonder, was it entirely made by Masanori Takeuchi? The album does credit T’s Music as another sound producer, but said company also don’t list the game on their website…
#RSIndividual -
It was never released on an album, but we actually know about every song title for SEGA STRIKE FIGHTER, thanks to public copyright details with JASRAC. Our host @nicolaashamman has been playing the game on Expert Mode to see them all in context!
#RSIndividual -
There’s a couple times when Masanori Takeuchi has only gotten a special thanks in a game for the couple songs he made. The first was Zombie Revenge, the other was Virtua Fighter 5, but we don’t know which VF5 songs are his!
#RSIndividual -
The soundtrack for Harley-Davidson & L.A. Riders was originally going to use licensed songs from American rock bands, but that fell through about a month before release and Masanori Takeuchi had to write all-new songs. Do you think it worked out?
#RSIndividual -
Our host @nicolaashamman has been super excited about Dynamite Baseball recently! Masanori Takeuchi scored these first baseball games that took Final Arch and chased the Dynamite Deka brand recognition. It’s a mental battle between pitcher and batter!
#RSIndividual -
Title Fight is a rare time Masanori Takeuchi worked with SEGA AM3, not AM1. It’s a boxing game, and kind of a sequel to Heavyweight Champ. It got its own kinda sequel, Funky Head Boxers.
#RSIndividual -
The first composer for Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder, Tomoyuki Kawamura, had to quit after he was made to work on Holloseum, so Masanori Takeuchi, who also joined SEGA in 1991, got to do the rest of it.
#RSIndividual -
Technically, we don’t know what the first game was Masanori Takeuchi scored, but there’s a theory out there that it’s Air Rescue! The sound effects for this game were made by Hiro, and Takeuchi’s said him and Hiro worked together on his debut game.

Thanks for listening to this week's #RSIndividual! Next week's topic is nobody, because that was the finale! No plans for a 4th year at the moment, but we hope you've a learned lot about many games and many people with @nicolaashamman.

Rounding off tonight’s episode in mentioning USP, the group who arranged the music for Sonic & Knuckles Collection. They're also tied to previous Individual name Saori Kobayashi and have an established history of MIDI albums for Konami. #RSIndividual

Most of Sonic Pocket Adventure's music is reused from Sonic 3, but only 2-3 themes are new, incorporating S&K's main theme. Based on some themed filenames, seems the Special Stage theme could've come from Sonic 3 but has never been heard.

A more minor Japanese contribution to Sonic 3’s OST: at least 2 people from the company CUBE, their Terranigma composers Miyoko Takaoka & Masanori Hikichi, made 8 songs, but it's unknown if any were used or not.
#RSIndividual ▶️ radiose.ga/listen -
Sonic 3 OST's coordinator is Hisaki Nimiya, SEGA's resident English master. Even if you don't know him or his game design work, you've likely heard his voice in LE MANS 24, SEGA Bass Fishing and even Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker in arcades!

Infamously, when Sonic 3’s music gets published to an album, the composer is credited as just, well, SEGA. A rare time that didn't happen: Sonic the Hedgehog 10th Anniversary album, which fortunately narrowed down 5 tracks to 3 composers.

Have you heard the remixes of the Sonic 3 game select theme in Sonic Jam and Sonic Generations? Masaru Setsumaru brought it back for Jam, and while he didn't compose the original tune, he made a pretty similar tune for Dream Passport 2’s main menu theme!

Two S.S.T. members that never got Individual episodes (yet) were Masaru Setsumaru and Yoshiaki Kashima, the music programmer and sound driver programmer respectively. #RSIndividual ▶️ radiose.ga/listen

Of course, there were plenty of more Japanese SEGA Sound Team (S.S.T) members involved with Sonic 3 on different fronts, so let’s take a moment to mention them, who've already had Individual episodes of their own.

Because Sonic 3 & Knuckles has more zones than any Sonic The Hedgehog game before it, it has a stacked cast of background artists to assist in their visual designs. Let's stop and appreciate the scenery for a bit~

For 6 months, Sonic 3 was developed as a Sonic Adventure-style 3D game that would've used the SVP chip (used for Mega Drive's Virtua Racing). That idea was scrapped; however, a leftover of that is this 3D Sonic model on the title screen.
#RSIndividual ▶️ radiose.ga/listen -
On to programmers now, and this is one of the only changes between the Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles team as for the latter, Takahiro Hamano replaced Hiroshi Nikaidoh. …Except, an early video of Sonic 3 showed Hamano-san instead!
#RSIndividual ▶️ radiose.ga/listen -
Firstly, this notable designer of Sonic & Knuckles: Takashi Iizuka. He innovated Sonic 3 by giving different abilities and zone routes to the characters. These similar designs for diverse playthroughs would be seen in his future games.
#RSIndividual ▶️ radiose.ga/listen -
Let's begin this "lock-on" episode by mentioning the Sonic 3 & Knuckles developers not involved with its music. Some of them are really obscure, but others have very interesting stories of how they helped make the game!

Thanks for listening to this week's #RSIndividual! Next week's topic we "lock-on" with Sonic & Knuckles! Hear about programmers, artists, director and producers of S3&K; the SEGA and CUBE musicians, and even learn about the USP group from Sonic & Knuckles Collection.

It's not just Sonic 3's composers who have a Michael Jackson connection! In sound special thanks, you’ll find miss Mayumi Nina Sakazaki. She was MJ’s coordinator for some of the 80s and 90s, and in 2010 she wrote a book called “Memories of Michael Jackson” with a chapter about Michael and SEGA. #RSIndividual
-
One of the first people from Michael Jackson’s team the Sonic community got in touch with was Cirocco Jones. To this day, whilst his website still says he composed cues for "level 2 & 3", his mention of a song called "The Water" has been scrubbed. #RSIndividual

The last stretch of yesterdy's #RSIndividual episode will be airing in 15 minutes, tune in for some non-SEGA Masafumi Ogata content, including #WeddingPeach, #PachiPachiSaga, #mKimiWoTsutaete and more!
