  1. Things continue to suck for white nationalist website VDARE and its owners Peter and Lydia Brimelow. They stopped publishing in July, claiming that their funds had been sucked dry fighting a lawsuit in New York State. The one bright spot for them was that they were able to keep the castle they bought a few years ago in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, because it was owned by a nonprofit Lydia had set up in WV, where NY Attorney General Letitia James couldn’t touch it.

Now the judge in the ongoing lawsuit in NY has ordered VDARE to pay $43,500 in fines for failing to submit unredacted (or at least only properly redacted) documents in discovery. Moreover, that fine was $250 for each day they failed to submit the docs since April; now the judge is increasing the fine to $1000 each day.

A major sticking point has been that the NYAG wants the legal names of authors who have written articles for VDARE, many of whom have thus far published under pen names. The Brimelows have so far refused to give her that.

[Edit: It's been bugging me since I posted this, so I want to add that I actually agree with the Brimelows on this part, though it pains me to admit agreeing with them about anything. There are a lot of reasons why authors might want to conceal their identities, and not just because they're hateful bigots. I haven't heard of a prosecutor or plaintiff demanding this before, but it strikes me as exactly the kind of thing that can and will be done to outlets with far better politics than anything VDARE could ever cough up, so while the Brimelows' misfortune is generally something to celebrate, I can't help looking at this particular aspect of it with skepticism and a certain amount of fear.]

On top of all that, because the Brimelows live in their castle, the NYAG is arguing that that is an improper use of funds by a nonprofit. I honestly don’t understand how this works, but I frankly won’t complain if these people lose their building, which they’ve specifically said they are using as a kind of safe space where white nationalists can have conferences and gatherings without fear of being kicked out when antifascists find out where they’re meeting.

VDARE has been online for 25 years and is one of the more prominent outlets in the US for the anti-immigrant, race “science” intelligentsia for a long time. They’ve regularly published articles by figures like Anne Coulter, John Derbyshire, Pat Buchanan, and Michelle Malkin, who have also been affiliated with mainstream-ish outlets and organizations, alongside overt white nationalists like Steve Sailer, Jared Taylor, and Peter Brimelow himself. That approach has made it an effective tool for making the worst people and their white supremacist ideas more socially acceptable. The site took its name from Virginia Dare, who was purportedly the first European baby born in North America.
