#OpenTechnology is under pressure as the Trump administration freezes funds. The non-profit organisation "Open Technology Fund" says that these funds are unlawfully witheld. This should also concern us as #OpenScience activists in Europe.

Proposing terminology for a pattern I've seen for at least ten years.

"De-inventing": when an entity (usually a large corporation) brings about the abandonment of a significant common (often lightweight) interoperable technology, protocol, or framework, replacing it with something proprietary, isolated, and often heavyweight. Often done as a means of enclosing the commons.

First example that comes to mind is Google killing XMPP.

The user is not an idiot.
The user is not the enemy.

Designing useable technology is hard because you never know what background a user is coming from. Things that seem obvious to you only feel that way because of previous experience you've had.

Try to honestly empathize with those users who are having issues and see what you can do to help. Sometimes it even means guiding the users _away_ from your technology.

I have written FOSS projects that, by their nature, couldn't readibly be made useful for naive users but rather than letting struggle or being rude when they raised issues, I updated the documentation to make it clear what prerequisite knowledge they'd need and point them in the right direction.

Can someone ELI5 a good, practical reason why banking apps will refuse to work on a liberated phone, as if having the phone backdoored by Google from factory and sealed to be That Way was somehow lotsa safer than setting up a trustable Android / AOSP spin of your choice and setting the privacy programs you need?

Are the banks' official statements "we only trust your phone if Google can spy on it"?
