Sometimes I hate California. This be one of thosetimes. Olyns made these Cubes then put them at high traffic places, usually grocery stores. One could make an account, get a NFC card or use a mobile wallet, put CRV bottles and cans in the Cube, and get cash via PayPal. Easy peasy - assuming Cube not full, and functional, etc.
The State apparently has some laws that limit where recyclers can be. I guess a Cube outside a grocery store isn't one of them, but Amazon lockers, ice freezers, and trash bins are ok.
The deposit rates haven't adjusted either in a long time. The state has lost half their recyclers since 2013. The deposits are likely a budget slush fund. I imagine the beverage lobby wouldn't want anything to change.
