  1. Cardiac / AFib Journey Continued

Excerpt: "I saw the electrophysiologist today. We spoke at some length about my symptoms, and the confirmed AFib diagnosis. Summary: He doesn’t think that AFib explains all of my symptoms. He mentioned Paroxysmal Atrial Tachycardia (PAT)."

He saw evidence of PAT in the ECG (EKG) recordings that I’ve been doing with my smartwatch. He wants to implant a loop recorder under the skin of my chest. That’s a long term heart monitor that works 24/7 for two to three years. After it is done, it is then removed.

I have no problem doing so. I do however have concerns about my out-of-pocket cost. It is, after all, a minor surgical procedure. I said as much to him. I am to get a cost estimate from the hospital’s billing department. I’ve reached out and been told I should get an answer within 48 hours on my share of the cost. Nothing is ever easy with the US healthcare industry.

Once I have that estimate, I will begin to determine how, or if, I can pay that. I recently canceled one procedure because I didn’t get an estimate in advance, and got surprised by how much my out of pocket cost was going to be. It was only about $300, but it was money I didn’t have on the scheduled date. I will reschedule that one when I can set aside the money. Depending on the estimate for the loop recorder implant, it could conceivably get scheduled first.

    Onward into 2024.
