    Exactly.

    One of the most valuable things I learned in business school is "the time value of money".

    As a general rule, I prefer to stay at a job because I know the people and the organization.

    But another organization could motivate me to overcome this inertia by offering to increase my pay by at least twice the rate that I expect my next raise will be.

    For example, I've been a high performer getting annual increases of 10% or more, so 20% has been my target in the past. If my last increase was 2% and I (reasonably) base my expectation for my next one on recent past experience, that sets my expectation pretty low, as well as my threshold for leaving.

    As a worker, I'm as loyal as I'm paid to be.
