  1. Does a leftover seat method that ranks the parties by relative fraction (fractional part divided by the whole number before it) and a method that ranks division of the amount of voters by the amounts of already obtained always give the same seat result? (I have seen both explanations for the Lowndes method of apportionment) #politics #electoralSystems

  2. In theory, the US federal system with 3 counterbalancing bodies to ensure none assumes disproportionate power and that there is appropriate accountability is meritorious.
But it's been deeply corrupted and distorted by a mix of big money/lobbyists, gerrymandering, stacking and buying SCOTUS judgeships, wildly divergent State voting systems, massive voter suppression, filibustering etc.

  3. I was thinking about voting systems earlier: has there been research into a system where the probability of a decision being made is a monotonic function of its votes?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_b is just this but with the function being the identity, but I wonder if others have been explored.

  8. The #FPTP system in a modern democracy such as Britain is unsustainable. A system that much better reflects the will of all voters is essential and undeniable.
Also, a voter turnout of approx 60% is unacceptably low - greater engagement is imperative. I know many dislike compulsory voting BUT it enables gvts to receive genuine mandates from voters and voters to be seen to participate in their democracies. #uk #ElectoralSystems

  9. Is there a Approval voting system that devolves to a largest remainder method when people vote on party lines? #elections #electoralScience #politics #ElectoralSystems

  10. @ForfarFairLady @IndyRichard @Funwithphotos it is compulsory & you get fined if you don’t turn up. Spoiling your ballot is however allowed. But it’s pretty much always been like that. No idea how it would go if you tried to introduce it in UK now. Guessing an uproar about authoritarianism, democracy etc

Might be more productive to get big registration drives underway
