J'ai une #idee ! (oui : encore)
Alors je me suis dit :

So I stuck three #ds18b20 temperature sensors in our boiler. An #esp8266 and #esphome made them usable in #HomeAssisstant. What I couldn't have guessed is how much heat is transferred via the wire. When just stuck in a drilled hole through the insulation the temperature was 50⁰C. I then dug out the insulation and taped the sensor and some wire directly on the steel and foamed the cavity shut, the actual temperature is 73⁰C!

Of course its time to add some sensors to my #glassHouse / #coldFrame - I've built a wireless sensor (uses an old 868Mhz sensor network I have at home) and finally got round to writing a ds18b20 driver for it (https://git.solarcene.community/smallsolar/ukhasnet_ds18bs20).
It will have 2 temperature sensors - one will be installed 'outside' the frame while the other will be inside - but I'm not sure where - any thoughts?
-
Finally had some fun with my Arduino Uno R4 WiFi that I bought to learn some of this stuff and make an environment analyzer.
#ChatGPT wrote the code, I soldered and connected sensors - modern day teamwork 😆.
Had to find my old DS18B20 for temp reading because temperature sensors got way too hot on both BME280 and AHT21.

So I just started a project, a #RaspberryPi #Zero2W that will read from a set of sensors through the GPIO ports.
First I tried a #DS18B20 temperature sensor. I wanted to test first before welding and the pics attached here were the solutions I could came up with. I start to love the concept of #Wago clamps, but they are expensive and quite specific to the diameters of cables and sizes.
Still, it needs a pull-up in the data pin and first I tried the internal pull-up strategy but the sensor never appears to be detected. I reworked with Wago and added the suggested resistor from power to data as an external pull-up, and it worked at first try. I am 23°C at home :cool_dog:
Next step is to weld the cables to size down. Ideally I want to later be able to "easily" add the second sensor to the same circuit.
The intention is that the RPi registers stuff, (now temperature), and sends the logs somewhere. Most likely another RPi in my home cluster, that stores the data history and should present any dashboard via a web server. Maybe just implementing an endpoint to explore the data from external tools.
Futures: GPS tracker?

It’s not pretty, but it works! This is the breadboard setup for the #HomeAutomation that will be controlling our #solar kiln.
At the heart is an #esp32 running #esphome. It controls 5 relays (2 sets of fans, a light and 2 relays for a linear actuator for the vent shutters). It has inputs for 3 switches (fans and light), 2 #DS18B20 temperature sensors, and an #ads1115 for a couple of CT clamps.
All controllable via #HomeAssistant. Hoping to wire it up properly this weekend.

It seems Texas Instruments is working on a temperature sensor to replace the DS18B20 💪
Some interesting features:
- 1-Wire interface
- ±0.3°C (maximum) from –20°C to +85°C
- Fast conversion time: 27 ms (maximum)
- 2.5 V to 5.5V (STD mode)
- Active current: 85 μA (typical)
- TO-92 packagehttps://www.ti.com/product/TMP1820

I ended up programming this one with Adafruit's #circuitpython, because they have a very easy to use #ds18b20 driver and wifi driver. My preferred #Rust framework, #embassy, doesn't yet have a 1wire implementation and it looked a little gross to write it for a one-off temp sensor. I'll return to this some time later; for now, I have a thermometer located near my thermostat that I can poke and get a reading from whenever I want.
Also: The pi pico is a power hog but dang is it handy.

Guten Morgen!

Another alternative to the #DS18B20 temperature sensor, the really sexy TMP1826 that TI launched last year.
It uses the same OneWire protocol, has better accuracy, and costs about half of the DS18B20 😋
- Operating voltage: 1.7 V to 5.5 V
- High-accuracy
±0.3°C (maximum) from –20°C to +85°C
±0.5°C (maximum) from –55°C to +150°C
- 16-bit temperature resolution: 7.8125 m°C (1 LSB) -
I found an interesting alternative to #DS18B20, the MAX31820.
It seems to be a 3.3V version of the DS18B20, which should work fine with the #ESP32 I'm using.
It is also cheaper and in stock at DigiKey. I'm going to give it a try 👍

So, I searched on DigiKey for real DS18B20s to include on my next order... and what a surprise!
Almost all variants of the Maxim DS18B20 are out of stock (as expected), but they are now selling those chinese clones at almost the same price as the authentic ones! 🤦♂️
https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/umw/DS18B20/16705963
Crazy world. That seems to be how the supply chains are working in 2023. 🤪

Today I'm going down the rabbit hole of DS18B20 chip fakes 🤨.
A quick test of a batch of fakes I bought here in Argentina (because those seem to be the only ones you can buy on the local market) revealed that they measure about -2 C with respect to a real Maxim DS18B20. What a 💩.
I trust the Maxim one because it is within 0.2 C of some Sensirion sensors I have here.
-
@rommudoh great plan. I See you are working "up and bigger". I'm coming from the "other end" of the spectrum: I began using #RaspberryPi for temperature Sensors with #ds18b20 attached and programmed php web pages and a bit of python.
Now I'm trying to get smaller and more energy efficient by learning to use and program #esp8266 especially the #d1mini and learning a bit #cplusplus and #arduinoide
