  1. RE: masto.evelynyap.com/@evelyn/11

Want to see a glimpse of the near-future ahead (= today, if unevenly distributed) RE: #DistanceWorking as an operating model within organisations due to extreme weather events becoming more of a norm than an exception?

    Read below 👇🏻

Incidentally, how well prepared are you AND your org. for that to become a permanent move, more than just an interim patch like we did with the pandemic? 🤔

    #RemoteWork #DistributedWork #SmartWork

PS. Reminds me of jacknilles.substack.com/p/disa by Jack Nilles

  2. “[…] fully remote work functioned as a particularly important buffer. In more rapidly shrinking cities, fully remote work was associated with greater life satisfaction, suggesting that digital work arrangements may help residents remain connected to broader labor markets even when local employment opportunities are fragile” 👉🏻 phys.org/news/2026-08-fully-re

An uncomfortable truth employers don't want to talk about: #Demographics of their own workforce.

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #DistributedWork

  3. "When the evidence clearly points elsewhere?" Yeah, here you go👇🏻

“Leaders talk about productivity, collaboration, culture and the creative energy that supposedly appears when people share a building”

    And yet 👇🏻

“[…] mandate firms did not show a detectable improvement in profitability or firm value relative to non-mandate companies” [2/2]

    #RTOMandates #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #Leadership

  4. “Presence is easy to observe. Value is harder. A serious workplace policy should know the difference” 👉🏻 siliconcanals.com/t-return-off

Next time you're exposed to the silly #RTOMandates, remember the quote above and seriously question the motives as to why an org. would want their employees back at the office when the evidence clearly points elsewhere ... [1/2]

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #Leadership

  5. And one more quote from the article, perhaps worth while reflecting upon some more as to why did tolerate it:

“Remote work was one of the biggest accessibility wins disabled workers have gotten in my lifetime, and it did not come from a law or a task force. It came by accident, because everybody needed it at once. Now that everybody else does not need it any more, it is getting taken back”

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #Disability

  6. Here are a couple of noteworthy quotes from the article:

“Judge people on output. Did the work get done, was it good, did the team hit what it said it would hit. That is the measurement. Chairs occupied is not a measurement of anything except chairs”👌🏻😍

“Make flexibility the default instead of the exception, so nobody has to file paperwork and disclose a medical condition just to keep doing the job they were already doing well”

    #DistanceWorking #FlexibleWork #RemoteWork #Disability

  7. RE: techopolis.social/@tayarndt/11

"We Have a Return to Office Problem, and Disabled Workers Are Paying for It" 👉🏻 taylorarndt.substack.com/p/we-

“[…] some people are managing pain, fatigue, chronic illness, or a body that does not give them the same amount of energy every day. Working from home was not a perk for those folks. It was the thing that made the job possible”

Superb article by @tayarndt highlighting the costs of a lack of empathy within the workplace towards disabled employees.

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #RTO #Disability

  8. @tayarndt That's a great blog post! I just read thought it and first thought that came to mind is how little empathy there seems to be nowadays within the workplace 😤

Why do we tolerate such levels of brutalisation perhaps not just with disabled workers but also with care-givers/-takers? It beats me, frankly 😢

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #Accessibility #RTO #Disability

  9. @collective_truth That's one of the several reasons why *certain* people are terrified with regards to #DistanceWorking and why 6 years later since the harsh lock-downs of the pandemic it's almost disappeared from everyone's radar with the implementation of the silly #RTO mandates.

Nice work, everyone! We never learn, do we?

    .cc @sturmsucht

  10. @Mjhall ROFL ! 🤣 That's hilarious, Matt! And spot on, too! 🤘🏻😈 haha

    Definitely, one to keep for #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #DistributedWork and #Culture 😜👍🏻

  11. And here I thought Jack Nilles was a true pioneer when he first coined #Teleworking back in 1973, a unique opportunity to embrace #DistanceWorking as an operating model at the workplace. Errr, nope!

Allow me to introduce you all to Dame Steve Shirley 👉🏻 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Sh

1962. A whopping 64 years ago! Founder of a software company employing 300 remote workers: all women (working mums) 👌🏻😍

  12. RE: mastodon.social/@harold/116909

"The shifts to working from home and learning online can also significantly decrease carbon emissions. We are seeing clean cities for the first time in decades. Let’s keep them clean, and slow down climate change at the same time. Why waste this crisis? The time to think about change is now"

And then people keep telling me #DistanceWorking is a waste of time, no longer relevant, nor worth discussing with governments AND orgs.

    Read that again, please 👇🏻😎

    #RemoteWork #DistributedWork #Climate

  13. One more worth reflecting on:

“In addition to the daily economics there’s the problem of coping with disasters. Floods, fires, terrorist attacks, earthquakes & just plain lousy weather are all occasions where telecommuting has proven effective in rapid recovery — to the point where a telecommuting plan is a necessary component of the disaster plan of every State of California government department”

    Heat waves, anyone? 🥵

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #Teleworking

  14. “Telecommuters don’t need as much office space. The productivity of telecommuters is higher than that of their in-office colleagues. Telecommuters are more loyal to their employers; they don’t use as much sick leave as their non-telecommuting colleagues. They don’t even need to live near your facilities — or in your country, if you’re finding that quality talent is hard to come by locally”

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #BusinessContinuity #Resilience #Teleworking

  15. A couple of noteworthy quotes:

"Telecommuting is one important way of stretching our dwindling oil supplies and forestalling global warming while we invent viable and sustainable alternatives to those portents of disaster”

Remember, Jack wrote that fine article back in 2006... What were you doing back then? 🤔

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #BusinessContinuity #Resilience #Teleworking

  16. “Telecommuting is the substitution of information technology for the daily commute to and from the office” - Management by Results 👉🏻 jacknilles.substack.com/p/disa

The one & only Jack Nilles wrote that piece back in 2006. Pretty crazy, eh?!? 🤯 Now, read through it carefully, while we're in the midst of this week's nasty heat weave 🥵, and ask yourself:

What are we doing wrong?!?! 🤦🏻🤬

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #BusinessContinuity #Resilience #Teleworking

  17. “Disabled people make up a significant portion of the population, and most nondisabled people will become disabled at some point in their lives. Caregivers [...] also rely on remote work to manage responsibilities that don’t pause for a commute […] Isolation is a legitimate concern. So is exclusion. Any conversation about the costs of remote work needs to weigh both”

One for those at the far back RE: #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #FlexibleWork #Disability #Caregiving

    👉🏻 archive.is/cgHK4

  18. Although perhaps my favourite:

"When people aren’t in the office, it’s harder to command and control. Leaders can’t intimidate by hovering over cubicle desks and slamming doors. They can’t establish their dominance by summoning people to a conference room and pounding their fists on the table. They can’t even make direct eye contact to stare people down"

Choose wisely (with your feet) who you're working for👌🏻😎

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #Leadership #RTOMandates

  19. A couple of noteworthy quotes:

"They see any kind of remote work as a threat to their authority and admiration. They want to be worshipped at the office altar"

"[…] self-centered leaders tend to struggle with the idea of employees making independent choices about where to work"

Like I said, incredibly useful reminder showcasing some early signs to watch out for when working with sociopaths / psychopaths

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #Leadership #RTOMandates

  20. "[…] ordering people back to the office full time is a power and status move. It’s a signature strategy of leaders who exhibit narcissistic qualities" 👉🏻 archive.ph/QpMio

Fascinating new research acting as a friendly reminder: Whenever your manager asks you to return to the office, because of, you know, productivity, culture, innovation, etc. you may actually be dealing with a sociopath / psychopath 😤🤯🤬

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #Leadership #RTOMandates

  21. @Valdis It's more difficult, indeed, to be a bully, or a narcissist, when #DistanceWorking. If anything, because it's usually well documented, therefore, easily audited, and also out in the open for everyone to see when someone is an ars*h*le.

I don't know whether Zoom does have that feature, but I think it'd be rather useful. Instead of a green check to indicate Web presence, something to flag their bullish behaviour for all to see & remember👌🏻😅

    #RemoteWork #DistributedWork #Leadership

  22. @Valdis Many thanks, Valdis! 🙏🏻😊 Yeah, I saw that article earlier on this morning here in Mastodon, we talked about it in the community as well.

It looks like the masks are *finally* coming off, right? Specially, with poignant quotes like this one:

"They see any kind of remote work as a threat to their authority and admiration. They want to be worshipped at the office altar" 🤯😱

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #FlexibleWork #Leadership

  23. "We taught the remote workers to be proactive about communicating with their group members; not to wait in hopes of receiving calls. Often, you can tell whether someone is feeling well or poorly just by the tone of voice. We taught the managers of remote workers to check that effective communications were happening"

Oooh, for those at the back ... Jack coined #Telework in 1973!!! 😍👍🏻

    Does that ring a bell? 🤯👉🏻 #EnergyCrisis

    #RemoteWork #DistanceWorking #HybridWork #DistributedWork #Teleworking

  24. "In my opinion, given the technology available today, 90%+ of most business situations (other than the obvious hands-on things like your annual medical checkup) do not require face-time" 👉🏻 jacknilles.substack.com/p/face

You know what's pretty crazy about that quote ? It was written by the father of the concept of #Teleworking, Jack Nilles, back in 2010! 😳🤯

Yeah, we know, #RemoteWork is nothing new, and yet ... 🤔

    #DistanceWorking #HybridWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #Telework #Teleworking

  25. “When employees know that recovery is valued rather than merely permitted, they return more focused, more engaged and better equipped to do their best work. […] these practices communicate something critical about organizational culture. They tell employees that leadership recognizes they are human beings, not simply units of output”

From de- to re-humanisation of the workplace 💪🏻😎

    #Management #Leadership #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #Burnout

  26. A couple of noteworthy quotes from that article, worth while reflecting some more on:

“[…] cognitive restoration is not a luxury, but rather a prerequisite for sustained performance. Human beings are simply not able to operate at peak intensity indefinitely. Periods of recovery improve attention, creativity, motivation, decision-making and overall job performance”

    #Management #Leadership #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #Burnout

  27. “What if the practices being eliminated are some of the very things helping employees remain productive in the first place?”

In the midst of the stupidity behind constantly perpetuating, to the extenuation, the "Cult of Busyness", this short piece 👉🏻 hrexecutive.com/as-burnout-ris is a rather refreshing read.

    Does #Management / #Leadership *truly* care about their employees' overall well-being? 🤔

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #Burnout

  28. “[…] when policies are geared toward mothers or parents, managers have worse perceptions of remote working in regard to commitments, productivity, team spirit, and promotion opportunities”

    👉🏻 fastcompany.com/91547074/bosse

Dehumanisation of work at play? 🤔 Gosh, the lack of #empathy & understanding of #caregiving needs & wants by employers is just staggering! 😤

    What a bunch of ars*h*les! 😡

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #Parenthood

  29. “Stressful circumstances, long commutes, caregiving, disability, a toxic manager, push people to negotiate for WFH in the first place” 👉🏻 theworkforward.substack.com/p/

And, yet, all we keep hearing / reading about is how #RemoteWork killed entry-level jobs #GenZ and is making us all feel lonelier, more isolated even 😤

Gosh, the nerve! What a bunch of BS! 😡

    #DistanceWorking #HybridWork #DistributedWork #FlexibleWork #Loneliness #MentalHealth

  30. “Gen Z workers love to yap—or chit chat for extended periods of time—which experts told Fortune’s Emma Burleigh likely stems from the generation’s isolation and loneliness during the pandemic”

Ah-ha! Of course, you see? It's much "easier" to gossip while on-site and get away with it than having to annotate such gossip through social, digital tools for everyone else to see it AND remember 😜👍🏻

It's all about work, work, work, right? 🤔😝

    #DistanceWorking #RemoteWork #HybridWork #DistributedWork
