🇮🇳 Chess world champion Gukesh Dommaraju was given a hero’s welcome upon his return to Chennai, India.
The 18-year-old recently became the youngest ever player to win the title, after defeating reigning champion Ding Liren of China.
-
Gukesh D as world chess champion! It's been a very exciting match to follow.
-
There's a great report on @lichess with some amazing photos capturing the tension and emotions.
-
Unbelievable! Ding collapses and 18 years old Gukesh wins to become the youngest World Chess Champion in history. Not the most satisfactory way for the match to end, but I guess the tension just got too much for Ding.
Well done to both players for giving us such an enthralling event.
-
Congratulations to Gukesh Dommaraju on becoming the new World Chess Champion! He's the youngest ever at 18 years old (Kasparov was 22 when he became champion).
Gukesh won the title by defeating Ding Liren in a grueling match. Magnus Carlsen declined to defend his title in 2023 after holding the title consecutively since 2013. Carlsen is acknowledged as the best chess player in the world, but says he is losing interest in classical chess tournaments.
Today, there is an enormous amount of preparation that has to be done before a tournament due to how deep computers are able to go in exploring theoretical lines. For this reason, Carlsen likes Fischer Random Chess (Chess960) where the placement of the back rank pieces is random. It eliminates the need to study chess theory.

That'll be it for me, I have tiredness creep up on me. To me it looks like it should be a draw, though Gukesh has some practical chances, though not many. So I will find the result out in the morning.
-
Main takeaway from this World Chess Championship? Learn how to draw endgames when a pawn down.
-
Looks like Ding is sacrificing a pawn. It doesn't look like he's running much risk here.
-
Tie breaks will be tomorrow (if needed).
Four games of 15+10
Two games of 10+5
Two games of 3+2
Then draw lots each game for 3+2 until someone wins a gameSo no armageddon game, assuming the FIDE rules haven't been changed recently.
-
Maybe it's going to trade down to a fairly level ending here?
I'm off to check on the tie break rules. That's tempting fate :D
-
Ok, I've been playing some chess today but back now to a tense game. I have to admit that I don't like these Catalan positions for Black. There's a lot of latent energy in White's position. Still, Gukesh is not me, and while I think I prefer White, it isn't by much.
-
The final classical game of the world chess championship is off. I'm excited to see 1. Nf3!
-
Last game of the World Championship about to start. If this one ends in a draw we have play offs. Will either player make an effort to win? I doubt it, but you never know.
Ding is White and I'll go with 1.d4 as I've chosen that every time so far...law of averages says you have to be right sometime!
-
I just found out the Guardian has been covering the World Chess Championship:

What's your favorite news outlet for coverage?

It feels like Ding has escaped a difficult position today. This was a big chance for Gukesh to take the lead and probably the title.
-
They made the time control and another 30 minutes is added to their time. It is a difficult position for me to judge. I still like Black’s queen side pawn, but White is definitely more active.
Time for bed here. Could be any result when I wake tomorrow.
-
Well I still feel good about Black’s queen side pawn majority but time could yet be a factor. Ding is under 15 minutes with about 1 minute pee move, while Gukesh has about 25 minutes.
-
I'm happy to admit that I don't see what Gukesh has a plan in this position. His pieces seem wrong, he can't play the d5 break without some serious preparation, while Black has easy development and a queen side pawn majority. I think I'd rather be Black in the current position after 13 moves.
-
Ok, this is getting ridiculous. Gukesh has played a couple of non critical type moves and Ding goes into deep thought using nearly half of his time already. We're on move 8 out of 40.
-
And it's move 7 so Ding is dropping into a deep think.
-
French, for the third time in the match. Ding is channelling his inner Botvinnik.
-
I've been following the official FIDE stream for the world chess championship, and I'm so excited for the next two games!
-
Two games to go in the World Chess Championship. Today Gukesh is White and I am guessing he will start with 1.d4 as it's been working OK for him.
It will be interesting to see if they play safe and head for play off's or if either player goes for it.
-
@kfogel ...and today we got a n Agincourt today! #DingGukesh

CW: Chess result spoiler
Ding did win and we are back to level score in the match. This is exactly the same as when he won the title against Nepomniachtchi. He was behind three times in that match but drew level, most notably in game 12, just like yesterday.
Two games remain, then tie breaks if necessary. After a dour middle of the match, it has come alive!
-
Thank Caissa he did!
Ok, enough excitement. I'm off to bed, and if Ding doesn't win this position, then he doesn't deserve to be World Champion!
I'm hoping to wake the match at level scores again...
-
And Ding didn't play it! WTF is happening? To me taking that rook gives White a material advantage in a better position.
-
Gukesh dropping below 10 minutes to make 15 moves, in a visibly worse position with no seemingly active plans. Down to 8 minutes now!
-
Dear friends of #chess ,
I really like the theme of the board displayed at the official #FIDE streams of the #DingGukesh #wcc2024 and would love to theme my #LucasChess and/or #SCID with it. So, does anyone maybe know where a theme similar to this can be downloaded?
Thank you! -
What an up and down game today in the World Chess Championship. It looks like Ding will hold this endgame and Gukesh will be disappointed he didn't take his chances earlier.

For those of you suffering from withdrawal because of the rest day in the World Chess Championship, I recommend Advent of Chess! There's an unusual puzzle each day until Christmas and you can win a chess board signed by Magnus Carlsen.

One of my favorite features of #lichess is what ChessNetwork calls the "Tale of the Tape". It shows that Gukesh only made 2 mistakes in the game that he lost today.
-
Who do you think will win the 2024 #FIDE World #Chess #Championship match? It's a 14 game match between #DingLiren and #GukeshDommaraju from 25 November to 13 December.
-
They'll be facing each other in less than a week on 25 November in game 1 of the World #Chess #Championship. But here's pictures of how #DingLiren and #GukeshDommaraju got here. Ding won the World Chess Championship in early 2023 and Gukesh won the Candidates tournament early in 2024.
