The beginnings of my future series on 'How to Burn Your Supper Over the Campfire (and have it still be edible)'. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but this is a skill that I am exceptionally good at.

CW: Long post, food
Hey it's #camping season! (In the northern hemisphere) So excited to ride my bike to beautiful places to sleep in the woods...
Been trying to pack lighter but still carrying too much food and cooking gear. Hate buying storebought dehydrated #backpacking meals (Mountain House, etc) because they cost a ridiculous sum. Also not very many #vegan options.
Talking to an ultralight hiker friend and some internet poking led me to Sarah Kirkconnell's "Freezer Bag Cooking."
Got out my grandma's ancient Nesco dehydrator and starting cranking out bags. So far all hits when I actually follow the recipes (except I swap in soy curls for chicken, that works beautifully). One unfortunate waste when I ad-libbed a pasta with lentils and mushrooms- bland and gritty somehow. 🤢
I also made a "Thanksgiving Dinner" bag from an internet recipe that turned out tasty but too wet (will use less water than called for to rehydrate).
Yeah it's plastic bags that will usually get thrown away after one use, but it saves me from buying packaged food with even more and heavier plastic, and no need to bring soap for cleanup (and deal with dirty dishwater that pollutes water and attracts animals). And you can write on them what they are and how much water and add-ons they need, so easy!
I'm just so excited that I had to make a post to tell y'all about it. Carry on!

Camp Chicken and Dumplings is a simple, hearty recipe ideal for Scouts on a camping trip. Cooked in a Dutch oven over a campfire, it uses basic ingredients and teaches cooking and teamwork. Scouts learn to measure, chop, mix, and cook safely, enhancing leadership and confidence. Variations include different veggies or tofu for a vegetarian choice. It's more than a meal—it's an experience! #CampCooking #ScoutingSkills #OutdoorAdventure https://scoutermom.com/1253/camp-chicken-and-dumplings-recipe/

Making Masala Chai on a Wood Burning Stove with Snow All-Around
Join me on an incredible outdoor adventure as I revisit the wood-burning stove from a previous video, this time using proper wood and preparing authentic Indian chai in a winter wonderland setting. https://youtu.be/EOvxX07lkVo?si=M2L63X0xjymhbZaE&list=PLEt7TP8wqb183ShJD4HxTs48UZFPApSuG Filmed at Swain’s Lock in Maryland, the landscape is a snowy paradise after a recent blizzard, with temperatures at -5°C. I start by lighting the stove using twigs and a solid fuel tablet, demonstrating […]https://outdoorsyindians.com/making-masala-chai-on-a-wood-burning-stove-with-snow-all-around/

Now the hardest part: waiting.
Cover the pot and set to the side of the coals, so it simmers. After about 4 minutes, stir everything up and rotate the pot so that your food doesn't burn. Repeat this until the noodles are done.#dutchoven #dutchovencooking #camping #campcooking -
