  1. The other day, I saw this female house sparrow in one of the elm saplings in pots, plucking the yellowed leaves off the branches. It was fascinating to watch. A bunch of yellow elm leaves are now on the ground. What a cute little arborist!! 🥰🐥🪴🍂

  7. #BirdCallOut The commute excitement this morning was that as we passed the lake where the cormorants hang out on a little island with a skinny tower, the cormorant on top of the tower (which we refer to as the archcormorant) took flight, first sinking down to water level and doing a few foot splashes, then slowly regaining elevation and swooping off to some other locale. I had to narrate this blow-by-blow for my wife, as she was driving.

  11. #BirdCallOut Sorry to misuse the hashtag, but #NestCallOut doesn't exist. Saw a super impressive nest atop a light pole at a local mall parking lot today. There'd been a black vulture circling the area earlier; maybe that's who this belongs to?

  17. Good news!!! We have four swallows on the wire this morning. Our mating pair, last year’s young who has been helping all summer and one little fledging who made it through the dry weather!! The first two fledgings vanished in the drought and this survivor was the strongest of three in the next clutch. It’s a fragile achievement but bloody hell does it make me happy!

Not a new bird, but the first time we've seen one on this side of the continent, so still quite exciting.

  25. After returning home from a few days away I was delighted to find:

    * 2.5 inches of rain (so far!)
    * the first baby hummingbird at the feeder

    It’s a good day.

  29. The grackle caught the peanut I tossed toward her in mid air!!! That was impressive.

Other times, she’s the fastest among other birds to run and grab the peanut. Also impressive.

  37. Oh, I forgot to tell you that I sew a downy woodpecker pecking the bottom of the littlebirds’ peanut basket for crumbs. Too bad I couldn’t get my phone out in time. I refilled the little basket right after.

In case you haven’t seen my crocheted recycled-plastic-bag littlebirds’ peanut basket, here’s a recent Loops video with various urban wildlife. loops.video/v/gT2TAsQrFA

  39. My commute to work is only a mile and a half. But that is enough time to see mockingbirds, swallows, American robins, starlings, a fox with a white-tipped tail, a cormorant, and a flock of geese ready to cross the road. And on the commute home, even an eastern bluebird!

  41. So, a young grackle has been lurking on the lawn, and hops closer when I step out of the kitchen door, because this one has learned I have peanuts. Now hops even closer to get a nut. Clever bird!
