  3. Oh, I forgot to tell you that I sew a downy woodpecker pecking the bottom of the littlebirds’ peanut basket for crumbs. Too bad I couldn’t get my phone out in time. I refilled the little basket right after.

In case you haven’t seen my crocheted recycled-plastic-bag littlebirds’ peanut basket, here’s a recent Loops video with various urban wildlife. loops.video/v/gT2TAsQrFA

  7. My commute to work is only a mile and a half. But that is enough time to see mockingbirds, swallows, American robins, starlings, a fox with a white-tipped tail, a cormorant, and a flock of geese ready to cross the road. And on the commute home, even an eastern bluebird!

  9. So, a young grackle has been lurking on the lawn, and hops closer when I step out of the kitchen door, because this one has learned I have peanuts. Now hops even closer to get a nut. Clever bird!

  11. #Vultures! In the wetlands!

I was at the back of my little bog after releasing a few bats the other day just after sunset, when I noticed two of my local black vultures having a bit of a cuddle atop a tree snag at the edge of the water. Volume up for some swamp sounds.

🖤 I love that my backyard corner of the world is an overlap of black vultures and turkey vultures.

  15. We saw a red kite today. Fabulous bird, just cruising in North Fife. Flew right over our garden & field. Probably a juvenile (last year’s fledgling) looking for a territory of its own.
Wouldn’t it be nice if they chose somewhere local!

  17. The phoebe pair that nests under the roof of my shed just hatched their 2nd clutch! They haven’t had success with their 2nd clutch since 2022. The adult is standing on the nest looking in with a look of, what have we done?! 🤭

In March I removed the nest from the previous year. It forced her to build from scratch instead of just topping off the old one. It was sturdier and the first clutch didn’t wreck it with their oversized hijinx, which these new hatchlings will appreciate.

  21. On the white railing outside the kitchen, ThurstonBluejay cawed loudly as if to speak to her fledglings up in the tree canopy, “pay attention, kids, this is how you can get good nuts,” and took a peanut from my hand and flew back to them. 🐦🤍🩵💙✨

  23. As long as I’ve been observing Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at the feeder, I’ve seen 2 behaviors:

    1. Hovering in space, never touching the perch

    2. Sitting, looking around for other hummers, plopped there with attitude

    I can now add:

    3. Perched, leaning low, flapping wings slowly, so much slower that I could make out the wing shapes

All I can think of is that with it being SO hot (95°) it was regulating its temp with this funky performance. Or it’s a trendsetter.

  30. It’s happened.

Phoebe fledglings AND titmouse fledglings are here… AT THE SAME TIME. The canopy above the brook is filled with squeaking, flapping of tiny wings, impatient mouths, and exhausted parents wondering just what they brought into this world. 🤭
