#MsCardinal was here! I love her punk tufts! She loves peanuts!

Chestnut-sided Warbler! In the backyard. #birdcallout #lifer
The field guide has its song as "Pleased, Pleased, Pleased to meet you."

There are a pair of gray catbirds here! Just saw the two of them on the wooden fence. I also leant that they’re related to mockingbirds—that explains their songs and calls.
-
Chickadees! Swarming the feeder and that whole corner of the tree. So many, so big and round.

I just saw the red-bellied woodpecker!!!
-
I’ve been hearing a red-bellied woodpecker on the honeylocust canopy, and spotted her momentarily. She’s still up there as I just heard a trilling call.

ball of black redstart fledgling floof! on the back the chair, being fed by a parent
(after this, floof flew in stages over to the compost bin after and sat there squawking and squeaking like anything. the parent went up to the bird water and i'm sure was trying to encourage floof to attempt a bath or a drink, as i've never seen a bird have so many baths or drinks in a row *very pointedly*. floof didn't take the hint though and just SHOUTED.
parent gave up in the end and fed floof on the compost bin; i had to go do something then and by the time i was done, they had both gone. i'm not sure how far though, and i'm wondering whether we should put a box on top of the compost bin overnight as protection from cats in case floof needs a place to hide (ours don't go out, but there are a few around)? floof can fly, but not far.
ey can definitely make noise though :BlobCat_Giggle:)
please excuse crappy video quality: i took this through glass so as not to upset them.

Ok, ok, ok… very excited. First Ruby-throated Hummingbirds just showed up as I was sitting on the deck. A male and female together. Sort of. The male checked out the feeder and then did THE mating dance that I had never seen - a continuous looping in the shape of a J. Back and forth about 20 feet from my face. It lasted about 10 seconds. I was wholly impressed but I hope it impressed the female too. 🤭
First sightings:
2022 - May 4
2023 - May 7
2024 - May 3
2025 - April 19 (?!) -
Gray Catbird! In the yard! Who knew such birds even existed, with their cute little brown caps.

A robin was collecting some nesting material in my flowerbed this afternoon. Here she is with a beak full of “mud.”

A very bad photo of the very pretty Rose Breasted Grosbeak that stopped by a few minutes ago. They usually don't hang around this area, but it's always nice to see them when they pass through.

Why does the junco look like a dashing foreign spy? 😎✨👀🤭
-
Junco spotted in the lightly snow dusted yard. 😍

Fancy seeing you, pigeon! I thought you birds only come here during the summer. Thirsty? Hang on… 😂😘🐦

A cloud of starlings has been raiding the crabapple tree in the yard in the cold rain.

This week’s award for BEST IMITATION OF VIOLET BEAUREGARDE goes to the…
Tufted Titmouse family!!
Congratulations my fine feathered filchers. For years I’ve blamed the chipmunks for stealing blueberries, but now have caught YOUR WHOLE FAMILY blue-handed throwing your tiny bodies into the bush and making off with the filling for the cobbler I’ll never get!

I did not bring a camera (because it was a Social Nature Walk) so of course I saw this merganser family adorably lined up on a log AND one of the babies (!) catch and scarf a crayfish!

This morning I heard a familiar but raspy cheer cheer cheer but without the expected pirdy pirdy pirdy. After another minute, though, there it was: a cardinal’s birdsong
I had only recently read how birds might lose their voice in winter, so this was kind of cool to hear the warm-up….
