  1. #AT40 It's always that Andy Gibb limpet mine that drifts into the top 5 in 1977 and 1978 and blows up the whole Top 40

  2. #AT40 Oh my, the summer of 1978. Escaped my hometown for a summer of studying (ulp) calculus at Harvard Summer.

The Blues Brothers, King Tut, and a toga party. Among other hijinks.

  3. #AT40 1973, when you'd bleep "ass" from Charlie Daniels's "Uneasy Rider," but not "fag"

  4. #AT40 The summer of 1973, the twilight of Gilbert O'Sullivan

  5. #AT40 "Sundown" was written about his affair with the girl would later give Belushi his lethal drug injection.

    Seriously.

  6. #AT40 My wife can't stand this song, but mostly I think because by Labor Day 1978 it was so overplayed that you couldn't listen to it one more time.
And then it get overplayed again for 45 more years

  7. #AT40 This was a fantastic song, still is. (Yes, it was also about the girl who broke up with me.)

I was 17. There was a lot of that.

  8. #AT40 I had a breakup that winter that involved this song and the damn thing stayed on the charts forever

  11. #AT40 This chipper dreck beat out Boston for best new artist. One naughty single, and they vanished, and 50 years later we're still listening to the greatest debut album ever. Way to go Grammys!

  12. #AT40 "Formed in Ireland!" One hit for these boys and then ...well

  13. #AT40 Ah, the summer of 1976. I was just finished with my first year of HS, and taking chemistry at the local college. (Yes, it was nerdy, but I did meet a cute girl, and had credits in my pocket for college later.) High school was about to become miserable, but so far so good.

  14. #AT40 I do not count novelty hits like "The Americans." I would rather hear all Terry Jacks, all Paper Lace, all Bo Donaldson, than suffer through "Playground in My Mind." I instantly turn it off if it comes up on XM.

  15. #AT40 I'm telling you, the evidence for "the early 70s were terrible" is compelling and vast

  16. #AT40 I see I arrived for what should be, without debate, the easy nominee for the Worst Song of the 70s, and perhaps of all time.

  17. #AT40 By 1975, death rock was giving way to "70s sex in cars" rock, and two years later, a movie about vans...well, the less said of that film, the better

  18. #AT40 May 1975, finishing up 8th grade and the drudgery of high school was just over the horizon. But I did have this album. (And yes, we were all scandalized.)

  19. #AT40 I had no idea what this song was, but as kids we laughed and sang with it like Albert Brooks singing along with Francois Cabrel in "Broadcast News" I mean, how the hell was this a thing

  20. Okay, as much as I enjoy explaining the concept of Reagan and linear time to you all, I have stuff to do. (Unfortunately #AT40 is 1971, and I don't do anything before 1973.)

  21. #AT40 A man playing something this lame does not have the right to unbutton his shirt that far also, kill me

  22. #AT40 Look, the late 70s were showing signs of a musical rennaissance - but then, there was this. One of the worst songs not just of the decade, but of all freakin' time
