Anthony Burgess, the English nonconformist, reads Ezekiel 36 to say faith rests on two pillars: righteousness toward God and righteousness toward others. Corruption works to split them—some overflow with worship yet neglect justice; others trumpet justice while starving devotion.
A new heart, Burgess says, refuses the divorce. Such a split, he warns, suits the Devil perfectly and flatters ages that trade piety for slogans.
