I just found some (to me) surprising behaviour with #ImageMagick #montage on #Fedora 43.
Assume A.png and B.png exist in the current folder.
Run this command:
montage -stroke lightblue A.png B.png -background black C.png
C.png now contains a montage of A.png and B.png
Change the background color like this:
montage -stroke lightblue A.png B.png -background #6d6d6d C.png
No errors are produced. Now reissue:
montage -stroke lightblue A.png B.png -background black C.png
This time, an error appears:
montage: no decode delegate for this image format `' @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/746.
This took me an hour and a half to resolve.
I see clearly the shell programming mistake I made in the second command (although I didn't catch it because the parameters were actually constructed in #Python).
However, the final error indicates that IM processes parameters in a way that I did NOT expect. Is this just me?
I've raised it as a discussion here:

Ned Hamson's Second Line View of the News @nedhamsonsecondlineviewofthenews.com@nedhamsonsecondlineviewofthenews.com ·Llama Love + Got Tips 4 Yourself? Here Are Mine – Happiness Between Tails by da-AL
How did multiple major holidays get butted up against the new year? Are you as overwhelmed as I am to resist Auld Lang Syne’s annual review? Fortunately, when it comes to my novels (about them here), querying produced some literary agent nibbles that I’m waiting to find out about.
These are some “life tips” that coagulated these 12 months. Feel free to comment and add your own…
a) Vicuñas, like these ones photographed by Marshallhenrie, always perk me up!
- Vicuñas are related to llamas.
b) Reading fiction expands my heart and soul.
c) Good intentions and optimism are super powers.
d) Anyone who expects me to shut up and stop asking questions isn’t a friend.
e) Generally, generalizing is wrong and it keeps me from seeing people as individuals.
f) Guilt and shame can either spell doom, or become springboards for positive change.
g) Luckily, much of what I wish for never comes true.
h) Conditioner works better than soap on very dry days.
i) Scouring my doggie’s teeth with a textured thin cloth is easier and more effective than using a doggie toothbrush and toothpaste.
j) Listen, listen, listen to my own body, heart, and mind. Listen to people who listen to me.
k) Only buy supplements certified with a USP symbol. Otherwise risk snake oil or worse.
l) Dealing with poor customer service is helpful to everyone. Don’t take anything personally. Calmly state, ask, persist, and then if that doesn’t work, do the same with a higher up.
m) Never add “but” to an apology. If I wrong someone, don’t get mad at them for being mad at me.
n) And these’s no such thing as getting enough of looking at cuties, like these alpacas photographed by Philippe Lavoie…
Alpacas are also relatives of llamas, which are relatives of camels. What did you learn this year?
