  1. Ranking #60YearsOfX Decades #1: 1980s

The 80s begin w/two of the most important #XMen stories ever. From there, Claremont takes the book to its creative zenith, breaking new ground alongside a Murderer's Row of artists: Byrne, Cockrum, Smith, JRJr, Silvestri, Lee & more!

  2. Ranking #60YearsOfX Decades #3: 1990s

The #XMen reach their commercial zenith on the backs of superstar artists (and I begin reading their adventures) even as the creative quality starts to dip, and the franchise is asked to support a company in turmoil. #XMen60

  3. Ranking #60YearsOfX Decades #2: 2000s

The one-two punch of the Morrison & Whedon/Cassaday runs (riffing on Claremont in their own ways) help overcome the god-level awfulness of the Austen run, aided by the underrated Brubaker, Carey & Fraction runs. #XMen60 #XMen

  4. Ranking #60YearsOfX Decades #4: 1970s

The back of the decade features some of the most entertaining & foundational #XMen stories ever, as a new team is born & Claremont, Cockrum & Byrne get rolling. In the front half, the X-Men exist (barely) as infrequent guest stars.

  5. Ranking #60YearsOfX Decades #5: 2010s

Bendis' run is interesting (til the O5 wear out their welcome) & this does give us the start of Krakoa, but mostly a middling-to-nad decade as Marvel struggles to reconcile the #XMen w/broader corporate interests pre-Fox merger.

  6. We've celebrated #60YearsOfX, but with 5 days left in the month, let's finish out #XMen60 by ranking the 6 decades of its existence! In 6th place is the 1960s, in which the power of Kirby & Adams can't overcome a middling series lacking an identity, heading torwards cancellation.

  7. 360 - Year 60 Memorable Moment: Face Off

Lots of memorable moments this year, from Magneto's last stand to the repeated deaths of Sinister, but I'll never forget the time Moira killed Banshee and used his face as a mask to sneak onto Krakoa.

One of those covers that manages to tell a little story on its own while still reflecting the contents inside.

  16. 353 - Year 59 Fun Fact: Retooled Trial

The Trial of Magneto was meant to be an arc in X-Factor but Marvel didn't believe sales on the book were "big enough" for the story, so they spun it off into its own limited series (& cancelled X-Factor)

    #2021XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen60 #Xmen

  18. 351 - Year 59 Charatcer: Destiny

Though she only appears in a handful of issues in 2021, her return marks a turning point in the Krakoan Era, and the inciting incident of "Inferno".

    #2021XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen60 #Xmen

  19. 350 - Year 59 Creator: Gerry Duggan

With the launch of a new volume of X-Men (and Hickman stepping back), Papa Gerry comes aboard as the architect of the newly formed team, bringing a sense of more traditional superheroics back to the line.

    #2021XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen60 #Xmen

  20. 349 - Year 59 Cover: X-Men (vol. 6) #2

From the always reliable Pepe Larraz, the unique perspective helps the cover standout and put a new spin on the "showcase the newly-assembled team" trope.

    #2020XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen60 #Xmen

  23. 347 - Year 58 Fun Fact: Covid Delays

Not "fun" per se, but worth noting how the pandemic forced plans to change. For example, "X of Swords" got pushed to the fall while #Xmen #7 is clearly setting up Way of X, which wouldn't launch for over a year.

    #2020XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen60

    #2020XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen60 #Xmen

  25. 344 - Year 58 Creator: Leinil Francis Yu

While #Xmen has a bit of a rotating art team this year, Yu is constant among them; not his first stint as an X-artist, his gritty, sometimes minimalist style is an interesting contrast w/Hickman's big ideas.

    #2020XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen60

    #2019XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen60 #Xmen

  30. 339 - Year 57 Character: Moira X

Though she mostly only appears in a pair of limited series, no character casts a larger shadow over the dawn of Krakoa than the one at the symbolic and literal center of it.

  32. "More than superheroes, the X-Men are science-fiction characters. This includes superheroes, but it also includes other things: aliens and starships and space pirates and stakes on a cosmic, not just a planetary, scale."

  33. 091 - Year 16 Cover: X-Men #111

    #1977XMen #60YearsOfX #Xmen

  35. 089 - Year 15 Fun Fact: Thor by Proxy

Because Jim Shooter wouldn't let Thor or the Silver Surfer be beaten by a woman, Claremont & Cockrum had Phoenix fight Firelord (who'd fought Thor to a standstill) in #XMenX-Men #105 in order to establish her power levels.

    #1977XMen #60YearsOfX#XMen

  36. 088 - Year 15 Comic: X-Men
#107A jam-packed sci-fi epic as the X-Men find themselves over their heads in a galaxy far, far away, w/the fate of existence hanging in the balance; packed w/characters & bursting w/energy, it's the biggest issue yet.

    #1977XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen

  37. 087 - Year 15 Character: Starjammers

With #StarWars taking the world by storm, Cockrum debuts his signature characters (outside of maybe Nightcrawler) in the last issue of his first X-Men run, in the midst of the series' expansion into sci-fi.

    #1977XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen

  38. 086 - Year 15 Creator: Dave Cockrum

Though he only pencils half of the year's issues, Cockrum - the signature "All New, All Different" artist to date - makes them count, and ends his first stint as series artist on a tremendous high note.

    #1977XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen

  39. 085 - Year 15 Cover: X-Men #104
Dave Cockrum celebrates the return of Magneto with an homage to X-Men #1, swapping in the "All New, All Different" X-Men for the O5 (Colossus is about as effective as Marvel Girl was).

    #1977XMen #60YearsOfX #XMen

  40. Year 15: X-Men #104-109, Captain America Annual #4, Iron Fist #15
Cockrum is out, John Byrne is in! Magneto's back (& not a baby)! The Starjammers, Imperial Guard, Sabretooth, Deathbird, & James Hudson all debut! All that and more in #1977XMen!
