@mzedp There was a significant difference in the detainment between German-national/German American citizens and Japanese nationals/Japanese Americans in the scale and specificity of individuals imprisoned. 110,000 AJAs from the entire West Coast of the US were arrested as entire families regardless of age, and racially imprisoned primarily based on residential address without regard to real or imagined political affinities or political activities or personal vendettas. No similar mass sweep took place of US German or Italian ethnics. The corollary to the detainment of individual German/Italians would be the selective individualized arrests and imprisonment of the 10,000 or so Japanese/Japanese Americans primarily from Hawaii out of an AJA plantation worker population of about 185,000. My uncle was arrested in Hawai'i (detained) and held at bayonet point as a suspicious enemy Jap at about 6pm on Dec 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor after he had spent all day as a First Responder and Corporal in the Hawaiian Territorial Guard diving into the oil slicked burning harbor to rescue sailors and marines. He and his fellow US citizen Japanese American kama'aina guardsmen were released after intervention by local plantation owners, as the kama'aina sons of their workers.

Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth just deleted the history of the “Go For Broke” 442nd Infantry Regiment from the Army website as they eliminate any mention of race or gender.
The 442nd was formed for Japanese-American heroes. They were awarded 21 Medals of Honor, 4,000 Purple Hearts and 4,000 Bronze Stars for as they defeated Nazis, liberating Italy and France and freeing Jewish concentration camp survivors from a Dachau satellite camp.

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the US military in World War II is the most decorated unit in US history. They were a fascism-busting unit comprised almost entirely of Japanese-American soldiers, many of whom had family interned in U.S. concentration camps.
Today the US government wants us to forget they existed.
Just one more thing about the current administration that makes me feel ill.

#Japanese #442ndOn this Memorial Day, I have to ask, whose ultimate sacifice should I honor?
I never served in the military.
Not because I"m a pacifist but, when my draft # was called in 1970, I decided that the Vietnam war was not a "war" that I believed in. So, I did @thing I could to (successfully) to avoid being drafted & serving in the military.
While I have respect for all of those, regardless of their race, who gave their lives to protect our country from threats, both real & imagined, my heart goes out most to the Japanese American men, who served in the segregted 442nd Infantry Regiment, and who gave their lives defending "democracy" while their families were unjustly incarcerated in desolate concentration camps across the West at the same time.
If I had been a Japanese American alive at that time, I would have been a "No-no" boy and would not have served in the 442nd under those circumstances but I have great respect for those who did.
