the start of our play session involved mucking about with the compass a bit. we didn't *use* the compass for anything (including in this session), but we did study the compass's utility as a game-world item
there's some secret stuff to trawl around for, so we may yet play again, and if we do, a compass might be a particularly useful tool to get us exactly where we want to go (i.e. "real" orienteering rather than "pick a relatively obvious landmark to set a rough bearing and FULL SEND it")

our final play session was really something, we ended up solving a fairly sophisticated puzzle while split into three groups, with pretty good radio discipline and remote signaling and all the rest.
still some PTT issues and a few "over"s that didn't end the message, but a far cry from our early play sessions where we had comms conflicts and did a lot of disorganized wandering around!
a lot of funny moments where stuff that seems obvious to me (because of exposure in scouting) was not something my friends were thinking about until the problem dawned on them or somesuch. and real orienteering and collaboration skills were developed in the process!

I am going to miss #Monsterdon again, because once again, my Big Walk group are playing at the same time. Unfortunately that's how it shook out this month, but I hope y'all have fun :blobfoxheartcute:

finally opened my 500g package of erjingtiao. they are SO much nicer than the ones I got from The Mala Market, no doubt because they have been stored dry for less time and have loss less moisture.
500g is a lot of peppers, I've gotta get more Sichuan recipes into my repertoire, but that was part of the idea. inaugural use of the peppers was shoushi baicai which came out delicious (in part because I threw in some of the "mala sauce" from MM, which is quite good!)

somewhat amusingly, the thing that most threatens my growing connection to physics lady is that we find ourselves on... not necessarily *opposite* sides of "AI", but there is some tension there when the subject has come up (mostly in passing)
she has previously mentioned to me that she is on an "AI" policy board of some sort at her organization and while we strolled and chatted yesterday, mentioned the strength of the impression left by OpenAI's presentation at Black Hat about the HuggingFace incident. so I watched that while I puttered about last night and shared some thoughts today, and we discussed it in a way I'd call "sparring" over the implications for infosec (briefly: she considers the autonomous angle much more important than I do)
Nothing heated, but we did end up tabling the discussion as something that works better face-to-face.
Almost funny to think about the prospect that this would be a deal-breaker?

It plays very much like Balatro in terms of keeping up with the scaling, except that you don't *have* to clear a round with a single hand.
The Pinecone (pinzu) and Wicker Man (souzu) jokers that add han for their associated suits are very strong with the original deck since the manzu are removed due to the 2-player format, so re-suiting or destroying tiles in the 'other' suit (or just holding both jokers) means a lot of free han.
And just like Balatro, multiplicative effects dominate in the later game. It took me a while to realize how much han I was missing out on because I wasn't moving nuji tiles (1.5x) to the right side of my hand before a win.
I will definitely get this game at release, it's fantastic.

CW: living through "AI" in OSS, costs
Project I contribute to is implementing an AGENTS.md that explains that contributions involving code/etc. generated by "AI" tools are not welcome, which is good.
Knowing that models often just eagerly ignore these files, I decided to give it a trial run with a half-dozen of whatever's currently on tap.
Half of them ignored the instructions, which is… quite a lot of improvement, actually. It used to be ~100% of tools would ignore instructions to this effect.
After working backwards from GitHub's funny-money "AI Credits" that are used to obfuscate the real cost, it cost me about $5 to run this rudimentary check.

Brunch and stroll was quite nice. I made the ENORMOUS MISTAKE of forgetting to make reservations to the place we had in mind and didn't realize until last night? :blobfoxfacepalm: But was able to get us a backup reservation a short walk from the original intent. Not as nice of a brekkie but still perfectly good.
And then just...walking around. The Public Garden, the Esplanade. Got coffee/tea and sat along the river and talked, varying topics. Mostly managed to not be distracted by the Red Line trains going over the Longfellow (my favorite sight in Boston).
5+ hours of sharing each other's company in a pretty unstructured way. Cozy, and a touch romantic. Slow burn type sitch.

I have been cursed with knowledge, so I am spreading it.
Someone has done a mash-up of the lyrics from "Toxic" by Brittney Spears with the (tempo-adjusted) instrumental stems from "Change (In the House of Flies)" by Deftones. Some misc. melodic stuff from "Toxic" but it's mostly just the Deftones track musically.
It… works a lot better than it should.

it brightens my day to know that these little glimmers of mostly-good things in my own life mean something to you. it feels very nice that I have a bunch of rectangle friends cheering me on :blobfoxheartcute:

oh, and: we tasted each other's (cup) ice cream.
I just thought that was sweet. Not everybody shares food 'freely', but I find it endearing in a partner.
The flavor she got was ominously named "Dump him" which uh. Well, I didn't read anything into that, but it's hard not to chuckle at it. Would make a cute story in hindsight if it comes to all that.
I had strawberry cream and I think it was the better flavor, and "better" matters here, she has a playfully competitive side.
Was telling me about "competing" with her brother to identify the best ice cream venue in the neighborhood, including scientific testing with blind trials. She was "right" and very proud of it. Asked her if it's a per-neighborhood tournament, or if it's the whole metro area. She paused and wanted to think more about that, might have given her an idea for doubling down on the bit.
