  1. This is something no one needed. Maybe not even me. But I did it anyway.

    slott56.github.io/2026-04-04_a

The original question was how to make a fair choice from 7 things using only D6.

It got out of hand. I have a "sort-of" solution that maps to the polyhedral dice (as well as lots of other prime numbers and stuff.)

  2. This seems to be what all the cool kids are doing nowadays.

Maybe too deep a dive. I have fun. I can now fix my DSL so that it produces actual correct answers for spell difficulties in the very few cases where this matters.

  4. See slott56.github.io/category/ttr

I've got a DSL that covers a number of bases. The corpus of almost 400 spells all seem to work.

The whole point was to let me unburden myself of the details of a TTRPG world. Now that I've got spells and creatures, I can move forward into magical items and other juicy details.

  5. CW: Python rant

@slott56 I did link the section talking about - yes - the `if-else` conditional expression (explicitly called "ternary operator" in a parenthesized note) as is apparent from the link ending with `#conditional-expressions`.

My apologies for assuming a programmer would be able to decipher a URL in case their browser would not jump to the correct section by itself.

  6. @slott56 @Natascha_Strobl Come on, don't be that harsh. They have a tough life. If you know German you may listen to this song by #Knorkator. They give you some insights into how difficult the life of rich people is.

  7. @ChristosArgyrop @slott56 @Perl @adamcrussell I think a #Perl7 release needs true *game* changes to change minds, like `use feature 'class'` (a/k/a #Corinna, initial PR by @leonerd opened last week: github.com/Perl/perl5/pull/206), plus smaller accepted features with sane defaults: perldoc.perl.org/functions/use

Building and showing off great #Perl drives interest and a cycle of others doing likewise. Fashion is a secondary effect.

  8. I’ll be talking about DSLs for the TTRPG problem domain. In a lightning talk.
I hope this tiny slide deck makes sense to someone other than me.

  9. Registered. Not signed up for tutorials today. Going to spend time hanging in the hallways now that I found a handy outlet to charge my laptop.

  10. “There’s also the underlying unreliability of hallucination-prone Large Language Models. While a premium request chasing its tail and spitting out half-broken code might be frustrating, that same fuckup is a lot less forgivable when you’re paying the costs yourself.”

  11. How often do you see this? Almost the same hands.

Also. We say “The 10’s are fully represented.” Seeing all four of a rank in a cribbage deal seems like a rarity.

  12. Opponent’s opening hand. Ouch! Yes. They won handily.

  13. Saw the 555J deal and did not hyperventilate much. (Covered it with a fake coughing fit.)

Sad I didn’t get the required 5❤️. But. Did leave the opponent in the lurch.

  14. I bought a chainsaw. Cleared some limbs. But. Am I just a dilettante mountain man? Have chainsaw; doesn’t use it but once?

Clearing another tree today. Had to top up the oil. So. That makes me feel a little less of a poser.

Now I need to work on making straighter cut without twisting the blade so it binds.

  15. Wow! Thats a pile of points. I did not leave them in the lurch, though. Opponent had first count picked up a 16 point hand and rounded onto 4th street.

  16. Good turnout today. Delightful weather. We parked on Church st around 10AM. Coffee shop. Lunch. Shopping. Old Courthouse at 2. March. Songs and speeches. Beers and snackies. Jazz concert at the high school.

Outside the criminal idiocy in the federal government, life could be good. Tax the oligarchy into oblivion and it might be better.

  17. #NoKings #Hendersonville Good turnout today. Delightful weather. We parked on Church st around 10AM. Coffee shop. Lunch. Shopping. Old Courthouse at 2. March. Songs and speeches. Beers and snackies. Jazz concert at the high school.

  20. We don’t live in bear central AKA Buncombe county. But. Something knocked some of our bird feeders over last night.

Maybe an ambitious raccoon or opossum was climbing up the porch railing. Or. Maybe a bear found it confusing and left before messing with everything on the porch.

Bringing in the feeders for the evening seems prudent.

People neighbor’s trash can was dumped, so, it looks like our bear neighbors are back with for the summer. They’re rough. But quiet.

  21. Not high-scoring. But kind of funny to have dueling double pairs.

  22. A crib. Lotta points by surprise.

  23. Yes. Two of the same hands. Weird, right? Did anyone shuffle?

  24. Down to a solid 85 type hinting problems with my Python-based DSLs for OpenD6 Spells and Characters.

This isn't as *easy* as I had imagined it to be.

But. After designing some unique spells and monsters for my world, I'm happy to continue down the path of refining this DSL. It's been super-helpful to make sure all the t's are crossed and i's are dotted.

  25. Opponent had this. I almost had a heart attack.

(The three fives and a jack is soooo close to the largest possible gabs.)
